At the end of the movie, you know with the corn and all, when Johnny's talking with the sheriff, is he Morton Rainey or John Shooter? I mean, of course he looks like Rainey, but is he really? Because you know, he still could be Shooter inside is mind, fixed up the accent, and pretended to be Mort just so he could just fulfill his sick, murderous fantasies.
But, on the other hand, the whole Shooter killing rampage could've just been a phase Mort was going through, and that man at the end of the movie could, in fact, be Morton Rainey.
I'm lost, please say what you think.

That's a mighty fine question. Good topic choice. But I'm not really sure. I'm guessing that the final scene with Mort biting the corn cob and what-not, WAS Mort Rainey. That he just went back to "normal" Mort after he'd gotten all that killing steam out of his system and Shooter just went back to sleep. *shrug* But that's just one opinion.

I'm SO glad that this topic was brought up!! I've always wondered that myself-- honestly, I've always that that it was Shooter... 'cause... that guy at the end was so creepy. I dunno, doesn't Shooter say something like Mort took the coward's way out or something? I kinda took that like Mort sort of "died" and let Shooter take over. Maybe? Maybe not?

Ooo Little Fox that is a really good point (that Shooter said that Mort took the cowards way out). And also, how could it be Mort? He is acting nothing at all like himself from the beginning of the movie...or is that how he acts when he is "better?" I would assume it is some form of Shooter...but the accent wasn't there... In summary: GOOD QUESTION!

I believe it is however you want it to be. Have you watched the extras of the Secret Window DVD? David Koepp goes into depth about what he meant by every detail... I believe he was a split man... two personalities constantly going at one another... it all made sense in his head... it was how he chose to deal with everything that happened... creating a character to put blame on to make him seem like the good guy.... classic.

Rushes off to watch the extras. I have yet to see that. Thanks Roo...perhaps that will clear up this question for me.

I've seen the extras, Roo, but I still don't know!
I'm pretty sure it's Shooter, though. Cause good ol' Morton took "the coward's way out". I dunno, this movie sure does make one's mind work.
But I'm begining to lean towards Shooter now.
Anybuddy else's thought's?

It could have been a composite Mort. Like once Shooter wasn't needed anymore, that personality was absorbed into Mort's own, thus giving him the confidence that he'd lacked before, but yet keeping parts of Mort - like the whole writing thing. Mort 2.0 - new, improved, and more insane.

Hehe. Insane Mort is sooo much more fun than the regualr. But maybe you're right. Yeah... I'm saying that Mort's personalities got all combobulated so that now we're left with a new and improved version. ;D

Leave it to Psnoo to clear that up for me! Psnoo I liked your explanation, and I'm sticking with it. It makes much more sense than what was going on in my head

Righteous. Where's the fun in being normal anyhow? Mort is much more interesting and dynamic! So what if there is a little Shooter in him, I don't think that piece of him will ever go away...

That is a really good question...I've thought about it myself... where does Mort end and Shooter begin? I think it's a perspective thing...everyone takes it differently...I can see were Shooter would finally take over, no longer need to hide inside of Mort, but instead take him over completely. Come on...the sweet innocent Mort wouldn't have killed Amy...and I don't see him killing Ted either...he may have LIKED too, but he wouldn't and that's where Shooter came in. Then Shooter showed Mort what he REALLY could do and like it was said earlier, he gave Mort the confidence boost and helped him become what he used to bottle up by writing... That's just my opinion, though..

Hmmm...Interesting opinions all! I am sooo confused too! I never really thought about it in this much detail, I just always assumed that it was Shooter...After all he said that Mort was dead... I don't know, is it me-or does he seem a bit like Todd Downey at the end...
