So youve seen Dead Man you either loved it or hated so why not give a review???
Here is my review which i did for an Angel assignment:
Shot in sepia and black and white , Dead Man raises all sorts of questions about life and death. The story is based on the “expedition” of William Blake who travels to the middle of nowhere with nothing but the clothes on his back to accept a job he has been offered. However, when he arrives ,delayed by a family bereavement, his position has already been filled.
To drown his sorrows, William spends his only money on a drink and soon finds himself in a compromising situation with a woman, when her lover returns and tries to shoot him the woman dies and William kills the man in self defence. Shocked and horrified William flees the small town with a price on his head and no where to go. The rest of his journey will see him and his life evolve into something he could never have expected. He owes much of his survival to a red Indian he meets called Nobody.
Nobody believes William Blake to be THE William Blake, English poet and artist and author of Songs of Innocence and Experience which would not be a bad title for this film.
The film is not only cinematographically beautiful but has excellent acting performances from a talented cast. Accompanied throughout by the haunting music score by Neil Young which perfectly captures the moods of this most unusual film. Jarmusch creates humour in extremely unusual and unexpected places but perhaps the most interesting aspect is how the main character is perceived by other characters: wanted man, killer, Chaplinesque to the spiritual reincarnation of a famous artist and poet and engraver.
A western, in true Western tradition the film tells the story of a journey: Bill Blake’s journey through life and , finally his return to the spiritual world, aided by Nobody, the saviour of his soul ,on his untimely death . All the usual attributes of the Western genre such as gunfights, shootouts, the hunter and the hunted can be found in this often difficult to understand film.
Beautifully filmed, thought provoking, sometimes confusing and undoubtedly controversial the film is a great vehicle for the versatile, multi faceted, sometimes haunting, Mr. Depp.
