What made you fall for Johnny? He's an incredibly talented actor who deserves more credit than he's given. He's quirky, he's not the traditional Hollywood actor and he's genuine. I have yet to see him in a role where he didn't give it everything he had, and I don't think it's possible. The fact that he goes against the profile of what an actor should be or should do is admiring, and it doesn't hurt that he looks amazing for a 40-year-old!
The Ninth Gate: Dean Corso is a rare book-dealer, and knows his business well. Willing to do just about anything for money, he swindles sellers by buying their books (or finding buyers for their books) at a price much lower than they really worth. When Boris Balkin comes to Corso, he pays Corso a HUGE amount of money to authenticate a book in his collection - The Nine Gates of the Kingdom Of Shadows. There are three copies, and Balkin wants to make sure he's got the auntentic one. Corso first travels to Spain, then Portugal and lastly Paris in his quest to find the authentic one and is followed by mysterious strangers - one who is female and shows up everywhere he does. Trouble also follows Corso, and he nearly escapes death several times. Eventually he becomes obsessed with his own job, noticing differences in each copy and wondering what it could possibly mean. Does Corso figure out the mystery and the true nature of the text? Well if you're 18+, watch and find out! Note: Has a very weird ending.
Why Dean Corso?
Dean Corso is the image of dark modern human nature at its best. He's sly, he's devious, he's charming, he's intelligent and always seems to get what he wants. He's a survivor in what is quickly becoming a dog-eat-dog world, but he's also human. He falls into temptation once he begins to decipher the Nine Gates and does anything to keep them safe. Not an easy character to portray, but Johnny is the master of adapting to any character and he does so with an authentic flair. He doesn't just play a character - he becomes the character, so much that you can't see the line between movie character and Johnny Depp. Any actor that can accomplish such a thing is worthy of much respect, and I have a lot for him. Each movie is an accomplishment and testament to his skill, whether it does well at the box office or not, though this particular movie should be viewed with an open mind. Johnny Depp plus Roman Polanski makes for a very thought-provoking ending.
