Ok first, did anyone giggle when they realized her name rhymed?  I sure did. OK on to the topic at hand... In some ways I feel she is a victim, but honestly she knew when she married him that he was like this. He has to get away to write...what did she expect? She is not understanding at all and she is really cold to him. Did anyone else notice this? Also...she didn't try very hard to patch things up herself...she kind of expected him to fix it. And cheating is NOT the answer. I feel like by the time J.M Barry got involved with the Davies, that their marriage was already over, and she was just upset because it made her look bad in public. They weren't right together, that much was painfully obvious. You can't really hold Mary Barrie's longing to be a part of society against her, it was what was important in those days. She simply didn't have the freedom of being a man. I don't think James treated her right, and he knew that because he apologised to her at the end. They just didn't understand each other. I think they were from two very different worlds, definitely better off apart.  My too  |

Yes I think it is a bit difficult for us to understand how social position was so important to women back then. JMB was very immature in his relationship with Mary I feel & expecetd them to have adventures together but I can see her point of view in feeling that her job was to create a home & a social position. JMBs , " You started moving furniture" , really summed it up. Seems he expected her to have fun but never really invited her to do so. Historically writer's often seem difficult to live with, guess they live in a fantasy world...just like JMBs room!!

I actually think she really was a victim. I mean think about it she said it herself that she was hoping for adventures. We have no clue what she was like before she married JMB. For all we know she could have been rather spirited and that's why he married her in the first place. But I do have to agree that James being a writer would take off to write, but the least he could have done was let her in a little. Although I do agree that cheating wasn't the right answer. *shrug*  |

Yes I guess she may have been quite spirited as she was an actress I think before her marriage but then seems she may have married also for statue as women often did in those days. JMB complains that she started moving furniture (he wouldn't be very impressed with me right now I assure you!). Guess she started to confrom to what she thought a wife should be also because he seemed to block her out. Certainly a sever lack of communication between them which is often the reason for break ups & so sad. Seems people move their lives on at different rates/times & that is when the mismatch happens.

Yesterday I was photographing the bricklayer laying the first bricks...just 17 days late!!!! But weather good so fingers crossed they can get on with it quickly. They have forecast a very hot summer so want to be in the new place to enjoy the large garden then.

Now we are turning this into a weather thread remeber in Uk you cannot hold your breath re the weather. We have had thunder & hail since I wrote that but they have finished the brickwork so now we need................

That could be important. You know on the off chance that this rain that's been hovering over us for days(literally, there has been only five days this month where it hasn't rained 5!!!!!) travels across the atlantic ocean.......

Ah, furnature moving. I wish I could do that. My room is far too messy however... As for the victim question, I think Mary Barrie *tee!* was just not a good match for James. She was so high-class and conserned with what people thought, where he was creative and loved to be young. She may have been like that in the past, but all I could see is two people who couldn't see eye-to-eye if they were standing right in front of each other. In my opinion, everything happens for a reason. It's a shame their marriage ended, but victim? Not in my opinion. They should find their true special someones. |
