As we all know, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory originally started with the book written by Roald Dahl quite a while back, in 1964 or so. Do you think Burton's take on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was more faithful to the book than the Gene Wilder version? What was still left out or added in the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? Did you like the book in general?

I was and am a fan of the book, I loved the innocence and magic written in it by Roald, and when I first read it when I was like 7, I thought it was just the most genious thing ever written. I can't believe how well Tim brought the images from the book to the screen, everyone is even better than I imagined it, and all the actors and actresses involved were incredible. I have yet to see the whole first version movie all the way through, I was never able to finish it, rather saw small parts of it. One thing thats bad is that the title is different from the book, and everyone dances and sings and from what I'm hearing, it was far from what Roald Dahl had wanted. But, because it's such a classic and lvoed by millions aruond the world, they must have done something good with it

Yes me as well..Iv always loved the book even as a Junior in Highschool I still bring the book with me to school everyday to read..sure people say " Thats a kid book" 'your really wierd" who cares though the book is so good. its evil its scary..its witty..its just so wondeful.
and Tims version was definatly very similar to it..Johnny's wonka is much more like the character in the book as are the Oompa lompas..they are exactly like in the book except for their costumes. but wow Tim did a wonderful Job. ;D

We had an old copy lying around the house, and I made sure that I read it a few months before the movie would come out. I was surprised at some of the little differences from the old movie! Mostly, Willy Wonka himself! But I really liked what Johnny did with him. Too great. ;D

Has Anyone here ready Charlie and the great glass elevator..well if you have..
I was thinking wouldnt it be the coolest if they made a sequel to Charlie and the chocolate factory..I think that would be the funnest..and it would be so original because nobody has ever done it.
That would be the 2nd happiest day of my life..first being if I ever met Johnny. ;D

There can't be a sequel... and I'll give you two reasons..... One is the way the movie ended. At the end of the book, the grandparents won't get out of bed still and they don't go back to the factory. And the second reason is because Tim Burton doesn't do sequels anymore.
I think this movie is much closer to the book than the 1971 (is that the right year?) movie.

I read the book last night. I don't think I read it as a kid Never liked reading But wow, it really suprized me how true the movie was! Quotes from the book word by word the same ;D I'm glad thought that in the movie, there was only one parent. Reading it, two parents I though made everything feel so cluttered One is the way the movie ended. At the end of the book, the grandparents won't get out of bed still and they don't go back to the factory... I thought in the end of the book, they push the bed into the glass elevator, and take the grandparents with them to the factory.

Okay, well I haven't read it for a while.... but I guess they get in the elevator.... but they won't get out of bed.... and in the sequel of the book, they don't make it to the factory as planed.

Really? I'll have to read that book too. Strange, I hadn't even heard of a sequel book until now. That's just... funny. And I think they did shove the whole bed in the glass elevator. At least I hope so. Roald Dahl's official site: www.roalddahl.com/

I can't believe I JUST found this thread. Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator is quite possibly the funniest book ever... it would be absolutely fantastic if they made a sequel, but I'm not counting on it. Honestly, I would just want to see how they would do the Vernicious Knids. Oh, so as not to be completely off-topic, I LOVED Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the book, of course) as a little kid and read it constantly. I hated the movie with Gene Wilder because it wasn't true to the story of the book-- but I love Tim Burton's version!! I was very happy the squirrels were put back in. ;D

I finally read the book the other day. I never read it when I was younger,- I was supposed to but the school ciriculum changed so I never did. I was just a Borders and thought I should buy. I loved it so much and the new movie followed the book better than the first one.
