You spell colour, I spell color... let's call the whole thing off!
Ok, by popular demand here's the track by track analysis by CC:
First off... huzzah for a POTC soundtrack that's almost in order! Sheesh. Why do they do this to us? Messing the order up like that... pah.
Well, at least all the names of the tracks are correct for where they are heard in the movie.
(Oh, and did anyone notice that Gore got a credit in the soundtrack liner noted for playing guitar? Coolness, eh?)
1. Hoist the Colours There I spelled it right. And yay, this is indeed the first part of the movie! Love this song by Ted and Terry and Hanz and Gore! My only wish is that the whole thing would be included on the CD instead of just the first verse and chorus. Ah well. The song does show up more in the score, as you will see, but only as instrumental or just the chorus again.
2. Singapore Yay, this indeed the music from Singapore! And it's next, huzzah! Except for the last cue at the end... oh well, we almost made it through 2 tracks without getting off. This is a cool piece. I wouldn't say I'm a fan of Asian music (though I don't have any problems with it either) but I really like the mix of eastern and western music in this track. I like how the new musical themes are playing on the (don't know the name of them) Asian instruments and you almost can't tell that it's the same stuff heard throughout the CD. Ok, the ending is all Jack Sparrow and as we all know, there was no Jack in Singapore so this is surely out of place. This cue sounds like the spitting audio-version-of-image of Jack's entrance on the boat in CotBP... because it's Jack on the Pearl in DJ's Locker coming over the sand dune. The scene is a throw-back to the first movie and so is the music. So cut the end off of this and stick it on the end of Track 4.
3. At Wit's End Could also be called At World's End because that's where this music takes us. This is the journey to DJ's Locker and, from the sound of it, it's the whole thing. Quite a long track, but I love the new themes in there. I'm not sure what to call it, but I guess it could be a new love theme, because it's all over Will and Elizabeth's one day... but it's other places too, and sometimes it's very sad sounding. Anyway, it's gorgeous in this track. We also get some of Davy Jones' theme on the music box. It's then heard with the love theme in strings over the top and they blend together perfectly- melody and counter melody. This is over the shot in the dark with all the stars reflected in the water- one of my favorite shots in the movie actually. Just beautiful all the way around.
4. Multiple Jacks Aptly titled, this is Jack in DJ's Locker going bonkers. You hear lots of the Jack Sparrow theme from DMC but it's all cut short and weird sounding, which is perfect. Then it goes to the crab music, which makes me giggle. Those are come cool crabs! This is where that cue at the end of Singapore should go... at the end of this track.
5. Up is Down Hands down my favorite track, and my absolute favorite sequence in the movie. Jack always walks that fine line between madness and brilliance, and this is pure Jack. I love the high opening line that starts on the violin and then to the flute, and then to the orchestra... makes me want to dance a little jig or run back and forth on the deck of a ship, either one. There's more of the new themes too. This is more of a new hero theme, very majestic and swashbuckley, but it's quite similar to the love theme. But that was true in CotBP as well.
6. I See Dead People in Boats Bah, 5 and 6 should be switched in order. They see the dead people before they turn the Pearl upside down, now don't they? This track has loads of the sad love theme- very pretty again. There's a brief instance of some Jack music and then some very sad music where Elizabeth starts breaking down a bit. Pretty sad altogether, but that's what it ought to be.
7. The Brethren Court Here's the new Hoist the Colours theme used some more. That song is pretty much the pirate's theme so it's the same way in the score. When you see lots of pirates on screen, you hear this theme. Interesting sound with the mandolin (I think) here. This is the music over the meeting of the Brethren Court at Shipwreck Cove, hence the title.
8. Parlay And this would be the parlay scene. eh? This one cracks me up. Close your eyes and listen to this track and tell me what kind of image appears in your mind.... doesn't it sound like wild west shoot-out music? Watch this scene in the movie and you'll notice they filmed like that, too. The shots panning across of the back of everyone's legs... It's the like the two gun-fighters taking their places in the street and staring each other down before the quick-draw. Except in our movie, there's 3 on each side, savvy? And that shot ending at Davy Jones standing in the tub... HAH! ;D
9. Calypso This track is probably the one I've listened to the least. I really haven't noticed anything cool in this one yet. I'll have to come back later. But it's the scene where Tia Dalma is set free and gets giant and turns into a zillion crabs... she really has a thing for crabs, doesn't she? (Crab claws, sending the rock crabs to Jack, turning into crabs... hmm)
10. What Shall We Die For Pirate theme, and we even get the choir singing the chorus of Hoist the Colours at the end. w00t! This is Elizabeth's speech to the pirates (see track title) and the hoisting of the colours. There's a nice little bit in this scene where Elizabeth steals a line from Barbossa's speech in the Brethren Court scene and he shoots her a look.
11. I Don't Think Now's the Best Time Again, aptly titled. This is the big maelstrom fight sequence and the marriage of Will and Elizabeth. (Barbossa rocks in this whole section!)
Just about all the big musical themes of the past 3 films come together for the massive battle. There's Davy Jones' organ theme from DMC, the Jack Sparrow theme from DMC, the Black Pearl theme from CotBP, the hero theme from CotBP, the pirate theme from AWE, the hero theme from AWE, the love theme from AWE, and there's probably others that I've haven't discovered yet. It's just huge.
12. One Day Love, love, love theme. This is, as you might have guessed, Will and Elizabeth's one day before he has to serve for 10 years as captain of the Dutchman. It's the love theme the sad way, the powerful way, and every other way it can be. Can you believe how these two characters changed over the course of these 3 films? Who would have ever guessed that the boy and girl who met on the crossing from England would become the Pirate King and the Captain of the Dutchman? That's about as bad-ass as a pirate can be. I'm glad that Will was able to have his one day before the 10 years started. I can't imagine how Lizzie would have taken that otherwise! She
really wanted to be married, lol.
13. Drink Up Me Hearties This starts with Jack in Tortuga with Giselle and Scarlet and and moves into the end credits. It's basically a re-cap of all the best musical bits of the movie and is shorter than the actual music at the end of the movie. That's been true of all 3, because there are just a LOT of names of show at the end of these things and they go one forever. There is one bit I just love that I never heard in the rest of the score. It's the high string part from At Wit's End over the high wind part from Up is Down and the hero theme is over all of it. It is just so cool!
And there you have. Please post if you heard something different than I did! ;D
