So. According to Tia Dalma/Calypso, and she oughta know, DJ's locker is a place not of death, but punishment. Where you live out your worst fear with no sign of an end to it. So what is Jack's worst fear exactly? I think I've got it actually.
And when Jack is there, he hallucinates multiple versions of himself as his crew (which, according to interviews I've read, are supposed to represent different aspects of his personality). Is this his worst fear? Surrounded by people just like himself? I think not.
There's something else going on in the locker, that may or may not be overlooked. But Jack names it. There's no wind. Not one lick of wind. By his soul, he'd give anything for some wind. So then his worst fear is lack of wind? Not exactly.
Harkening back to CotBP, Jack describes what his ship really is... freedom. And in DMC with the Kraken take-down imminent, he acknowledges that the Black Pearl is just a ship. Because it's not freedom anymore. Elizabeth hits this home by chaining him to it. Now it's a prison- the exact opposite of freedom. It's obvious how important his freedom is to him. So we might be compelled to think that Jack's worst fear is not being free. And I think that's pretty much it.
Jack's worst fear is being trapped or stuck in such a way that he cannot get out.
In the locker he's got the Pearl, but again it's not freedom. There's no wind, and worse, no water. He is utterly stuck. And here is where the MPD appears. I submit that the multiple Jacks are simply his defense mechanism for dealing with his worst fear.
Let's consider where the MPD resurfaces.
1. Right before Up is Down. They are all stuck between the two worlds and Tia Dalma says that if they don't find a way out by sunset that they will be trapped there forever. Cue 2 extra Jacks. And then ding! He gets the idea. "Not sunrise. Sundown... and then rise! Up is down!"
2. In the brig on the Flying Dutchman. Jack's stuck again. He knows what he needs to do, but he has to get out of the brig first and he can't figure it out. Cue 3 more Jacks. And a few "Think like the whelp"s (He almost never calls Will by name.)later, he's got it. "Half-pin barrel hinges. Leverage!"
Honestly, I can relate. When I'm in a sticky spot and don't know what to do, I almost always talk to myself. Outloud even. But I don't actually visualize talking to myself, lol.
So does this make sense? Or am I going crazy too?
