When I first heard that OUATIM was coming out, I had not seen either of the first two movies. So, being the good little moviegoer I am, I ran right out and rented El Mariachi and Desperado. It's a fantastic trilogy right up there with Star Wars, if you ask me. Robert Rodriguez has taken the genre of spaghetti western and turned it into a mythology. I mean, come on! A mariachi player turned gun-slinger? What a great concept! Your title character never having a name?? Whoda thunk? So discuss away about the mythology of any of the Mariachi films here.

I did the very same thing. I went out and rented those two, and really found myself loving them! It made OUATIM that much better in my opinion. Hey, I never noticed that they took the blood off Sands' face in that poster!

Yeah, I don't think they had the blood on his face in any of the OUATIM posters--even the European one he's all cleaned up. Trying not to spoil the surprise for those who don't surf the net, eh?

I had already seen the 1st two movies and loved them when I saw the trailer for OUATIM. Needless to say, I was in a Johnny super obsess due to POTC, so when I A. found out there was going to be a sequel to Desperado, which I own and loved, and B. It was going to have Johnny in it....let's just say I got a lotta dirty looks before the movie, heh, I think it was POTC again, started due to the squeal I made. ;D And lemme tell you, I'm a soprano, and it was high and loud. But worth it!!! OH! And I'm glad they cleaned the blood off his face! I would have hated to be spoiled before seeing the movie! Also, he looks better cleaned up. I should know, I have the poster hanging over my bed. He looks very nice indeed. ;D

I saw Mexico because the trailer looked really cool. I had no idea it was a sequel or even the third of a trilogy. It just looked like an action film, in mexico, with lots of cool stunts and all that I know I like. So I end up seeing it for the first time with my grandma. She ended up liking it, but she complained about the plot. And then she kept talking to me the entire time. And we were late so we came in just as Sands hands over the lunchbox. So I missed Malaguena! Oh well, I was freaking out when I saw it a second time: "OH MY GOD DID YOU SEE THAT IT WAS SOOO COOL!" I love how Rodriguez's got El jamming on an electric guitar and all of a sudden, BOOM! (to quote desperado) After some web surfing, I found out OUATIM was actually the third of a trilogy, which explained some very tiny loose ends I was wondering about. So I borrow Desperado/El Mariachi from my friend, but El Mariachi had a commentary to it that I couldn't turn off, and I never watch commentarys until I've seen the movie a few times already. So I watch Desperado instead, fall in love with it. What an amazing movie! So now I continue my hunt for an El Mariachi that actually works. -gyps

El Mariachi is just like that. If you have the language set on English, you get RR's commentary. Set the language on Spanish and turn on the subtitles. It sounds better in Spanish anyway.

I had the same problem with El Mariachi, gypsy. I had to set it to Portuguese to get Robert to stop talking! Oy!

Sadly I never got to see OUATIM in theaters (rated R and didn't get the time) but I will as soon as the DVD comes out. What is the date for the release by the way??? I need to mark my calendar! Do you have to see the first two movies for the 3rd to make sense? I did see about the last hour or so of Desperado on TV, but other than that I haven't seen any of them. I only care to see the 3rd one really. I'm very curious as to what happened to his eyes there. ;D

Oh ho ho! Curious, eh? Just remember - curiosity killed the cat. The DVD release in Jan. 20...2 days after my b-day. Late present for me! ;D You don't have to see the first two films, but it helps.

Yes, each film really does stand alone...they're not linked like, say, Star Wars is. More like episodes with the same characters like Indiana Jones or what PoTC will be!

I agree that while you don't need to see all three movies, it does indeed help. There are a few little scenes in each progressing movie where someone makes reference to the movie that came before it that you may not understand. Other than that, they are mostly stand alones as long as you know the basic plot and who Antonio Banderas' character is and what he does.

Well, then! Let's have some fun expanding on that. Who is El Mariachi and how does he change from movie to movie? What do you like best about his character, and what do you like least? ...and why doesn't he like puerco pibil??

First of all, I think he doesn't like puerco pubil in a vain attempt to save the cook's life. But *shrug* who knows? Maybe he just not a fan of pork. ;D
Anyway, El Mariachi, El, The, M, The Man With No Name. Let's see, there are many things we can say about him. First of all, in El Mariachi, he was a Mariachi mistaken for a gunfighter. This ties over to the beginning of Desperado. Drug cartel men in retaliation for him being a supposed gunslinger, kill the woman he loves and shoots him in the hand, thereby ruining any chances he has of remaining a mariachi. Because of this, the Mariachi, M, El, decides to become what he was mistaken as, trading his guitar for a guitar case full of guns. He travels from town to town killing drug dealers, along with the help of verious people along the way. Does this help? I don't want to say too much, because I don't want to spoil Desperado for you if you haven't seen it. It's a great movie. *hugs special edition DVD copy* ;D
As for what I like most about dear El? Well, he does indeed have a sense of humor, even if he doesn't really show it in OUATIM. If you really want to know more about El though, see Desperado, not OUATIM. OUATIM was SJ's movie, there's no question. 'Course, I may be a wee bit biased for our dear SJ, but who isn't?? ;D
