I hate the on topic thing...I just can't... I know it's necessary and stuff...I'm just not used to it that's all. that angry smiley with that board makes me feel like you're all angry when you tell me to stay on topic. Oh no, I'm off topic again. C'mon, tell me, I'm off topic, c'mon, c'mon wha, guys, I'm dutch, I can't follow all those difficult talk ;D

Hey, no worries. We all get off topic once in awhile. That's just the key though: trying to keep it to only once in awhile. The sinister, 'off topic' smilie is more or less incentive (I guess) to stay on topic. If you have an idea that you're getting off topic, it helps to tack that angry, little guy up in front so people know you are and it won't deviate from the discussion too much. And, the cool thing is that if you do it enough, you can pick up ways to tie the off topicness to the subject itself. The off topic smilie is one of JA's lines of defenses against off topicness. It keeps the balance between general discussion on a subject and random tangents that people are fond of going off on when it strikes them. If people are warned in advance (with said smilie), they can answer in parenthises (sp?) to keep the topic on track. If they notice the off topicness themselves, they can tack the smilie up themselves to remind people of the original intent of the thread. Sands doesn't dig superior food being divvied up around Mexico, so he shoot the cook (the smilie) to discourage it. photobucket.com/albums/0903/Greeny/Smileys/bs.gif[/img I never said I was any good at it.

well, i hate that little balancer already... it really, really makes me feel like you're all mad...maybe I'm just a little sensitive these days. But look at me, I'm off topic AGAIN. You don't mind if i don't use the balancer right?

I don't think HF would mind. But unfortunately, this little tangent is more or less what the little guy is for. How's about this, unless someone has something they'd like to add about the the real world echoing Sands' sentiments about keeping the balance, we can lock this thread, let it sink to the bottom and discuss this further in a PM. Is that reasonable?

Hey, no worries. We'll just close it up and let it sink to the bottom.
