Well, in a nutshell, we've got Marquez (baddie with the serious grudge) who is hired by Barillo (head honcho, cartel leader baddie) to overthrow the president. El Mariachi (the guy the trilogy is based on) is caught up in the plot by circumstances that are only really briefly explained (Marquez killed his wife because she shot him). Sands comes along, and seeing the opportune moment, gathers up a task force (El Mariachi, his 2 buddies, Cucuy the on again off again kinda baddie, Nicolas the president's advisor that doesn't mind seeing him killed, and Jorge Ramirez the FBI guy) to prevent Marquez taking the place of El Presidente, but not necessarily stop him from being killed (because he's too good). He lets the (evil) Ajedrez in on his plans because he trusts her (for one reason or another). That's the whole idea anyway. Then things start to go down hill, people get killed, but things go kind of okay in the end as El saves the day, more or less.
I know, that was a terrible summary, but this kind of is an involved movie and requires a couple of viewings to totally get it. I work better with specifics, so feel free to say where you're having the most trouble understanding it.

Fine choice. That basic plot line is explained in the very beginning between Sands and Belini (where El Mariachi fits into the story) and towards the middle between Sands and Ajedrez (what exactly is going on with Marquez and the President). Actually, more or less, if Sands gets into an involved talk with someone, he's probably explaining more of the plot. Convenient, isn't it? ;D

It's definitely a more auditory movie with action thrown in. And lots of the talk is all at once. You don't get a whole lot of time to let your mind wander.
