I have been waiting all day to share this with the rest of you Sands fans. One of my professors mentioned it during a lecture, and I immediately thought of OUATIM. There is a German fairy tale called "The Sandman" by E.T.A. Hoffmann. Most of you have probably heard of the sandman who comes to put sand in your eyes to make you go to sleep. This story is about a man who comes to take childrens' eyes! Here is an excerpt: "He is a wicked man, who comes to children when they won't go to bed, and throws a handful of sand into their eyes, so that they start out bleeding from their heads. He puts their eyes in a bag and carries them to the crescent moon to feed his own children, who sit in the nest up there. They have crooked beaks like owls so that they can pick up the eyes of naughty human children." Here's a link to the whole story: www.fln.vcu.edu/hoffmann/sand_e.html Has anyone heard of this before? (Apologies if it has already been mentioned; I swear I did a search!!)

Yes, I've heard of this before. There's a children's playground rhyme about it...I can't quite remember how it goes now but it's something to do with cutting off your head "The Sandman bleeds you of your mortality. He will blind your sight and fuel the fire of your insanity"---good quote, huh? ;D

Yikes, what a strange tale! I think I remember hearing something about it, but it's still sort of gruesome. Maybe Robert had that in mind when naming Sands... at any rate, good find, Sandswich. Cool avatar there!

Very good find! How interesting! Our Sands kind of turns the whole sandman thing upside-down, since he's the one who loses his eyes. Ironic.

I've heard of the tale, but not in anywhere near that amout of detail... My friend went out as the sandman for Halloween one year carrying a bag of sand with her... I never knew the gruesome tale behind it, and doubt that she did either... Thanks for sharing.

That's creepy...definitely not the kind of story I'd be telling my kids!! No matter how bad I wanted them to go to sleep!

one word... "oy"
kinda funny though... cuz my mom used to sing that song to my little brother... *sandmands coming, yes yes comming, to sprinkle you with Sand, hell say one two three, and you will be, in cotton candy land* ha ha... and after about a year of her singing it... he would start crying... when we asked what was wrong... he said he didnt know who the sand man was and that he was terriffied of him...
just had to share...

I love how most cultures seem fond of telling tales to scare their children to sleep which just keeps them up all hours of the night because they're afraid. Sure worked that way for the Easter Bunny. I've always wondered what would make Sands cringe at night.

Thast quite morbid. But you know back then, thats how they got kids to straighten up. All the fairytales had somehting about a kid being brutily murdered. This made the kids listening be good.
Havent you ever heard of the Grimm Brother's fairy tales? ITs at Barnes and Noble for like $6!
So do you think the script writer knew about tthis, as being why he named Johnny Sands??

Ewwwww. That's... morbid. Haha, but it's strangely funny, too. I'm also wondering if RR had that in mind while naming Sands and coming up with his character!
