Based on the thread about excellent thread about SJ's madness (I freely admit that I giggled like a weirdo at being able to talk like a goofy art critic), there have to be different bits of art that remind you of SJ besides Switters in Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates. Where do you see SJ crop up? What songs/movies/characters remind you of the daring pistolero?
To get this kicked off, I made an SJ play list that you can download if you like. Snag one song, a few or all of them, it doesn't matter to me. Look, I even made covers for it!
1. Louis XIV-- Louis XIV
Well I'm a weapon of mass destruction/ Got no apologies for a hyper concussion/ I might swipe your identity/ Take your love and turn it into obscenity
If that's not SJ, I don't know what is. He is nothing, if not a weapon of mass destruction.
2. AC/DC-- Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
Call me any time/ Just ring/ 36 24 36 hey/ I lead a life of crime/ Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
I don't think he'd mind being called. Life of crime's stretching it a bit, but I wouldn't doubt he thinks that he does.
3. Herb Alpert-- Green Peppers
No lyrics
Just imagine...SJ walking through Benito Juarez International...this song playing in the background... It's perfect.
4. Barenaked Ladies-- Hello City
Another night at the palace cause there is nothing else to do./ The same people, the same drinks and the same music, the same quicksand./ I think this harbour town is waist deep and sinking fast.
While SJ would be there for the money (and maybe the job), SJ probably wouldn't enjoy Mexico or Culiacan. At least, he didn't show it any respect while he walked his beat.
5. Cake-- Short Skirt, Long Jacket
I want a girl with a mind like a diamond/ I want a girl who knows whats best/ I want a girl with shoes that cut/ And eyes that burn like cigarettes
SJ would only want a girl who was his equal (if he didn't kill her first) and I think Ajedrez was a good match if she wasn't so conniving and evil.
6. Traveling Wilburys-- Last Night
I was feeling no pain, feeling good in my brain/ I looked in her eyes, they were full of surprise/ Last night, talking about last night/ Last night, talking about last night
"You really didn't see it coming, did you?" asks Ajedrez. And I think we all know what happened after that.
7. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones-- The Impression That I Get
Have you ever had the odds stacked up so high/ You need a strength most don't possess/ Or has it ever come down to do or die/ You've got to rise above the rest
While SJ may not have known about Barillo and Ajedrez, he knew that something bad was going down. Hence, he wanted to get out of dodge. Good sense of urgency coupled with a catchy beat.
8. Nirvana-- The Man Who Sold the World
Oh no, not me,/ We never lost control,/ Youre face to face,/ With the man who sold the world
SJ would like to think he never lost control, but he did. And he might as well have sold the world for all the good it did him in the end.
9. Creedence Clearwater Revival-- Bad Moon Rising
Hope you got your things together./ Hope you are quite prepared to die./ Looks like were in for nasty weather./ One eye is taken for an eye.
"One eye is taken for an eye." Maybe one eye is taken for knowing too much, but this is pretty much the scene: SJ's ready to go, take Ajedrez with him and then...the big dance number.
10. Nancy Sinatra-- Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)
Bang bang, I shot you down/ Bang bang, you hit the ground/ Bang bang, that awful sound/ Bang bang, I used to shoot you down.
Okay, so the rest of the song doesn't exactly jive with SJ, but the lonely, growling guitar and "My baby shot me down" I can imagine SJ down on his luck after the shoot out and thinking sad, pitiful thoughts.
11. Oasis-- Cast No Shadow
Bound with all the weight of all the words he tried to say/ Chained to all the places that he never wished to say/ Bound with all the weight of all the words he tried to say/ and as faced the sun he cast no shadow
Mournful, sad, depressing, especially the part about being chained. It would take a heck of a lot to get back to the US, no? Especially if his legends get back ahead of him. It goes on to say, "As they took his soul, they stole his pride."
12. Pearl Jam-- Even Flow
Oh, hand out, faces that he sees time again aint that familiar, ooh yeah/ Oh, dark grin, he cant help, when hes happy looks insane, oh yeah
He thought he knew Ajedrez, didn't he? That was a bit of a dump. Now that his punishment, he looks only a little bit insane, and that's a little bit sad.
13. The Ramones-- Time Has Come Today
The rules have changed today (Hey)/ I have no place to stay (Hey)/ I'm thinking about the subway (Hey)/ My love has flown away (Hey)/ My tears have come and gone (Hey)/ Oh my Lord, I have to roam (Hey)
Rather self explanatory, I should think.
14. The Verve-- Bittersweet Symphony
You know I can't change, I can't change/ I can't change, I can't change/ But I'm here in my mind/ I am here in my mind
More aftermath of Mexico. I imagine that not only would SJ not want to change, he probably wouldn't be allowed to change because it gets him through life as "sanely" as possible, and that devil-may-care attitude would be the only thing keeping him safe from being taken advantage of.
15. Butthole Surfers-- Dracula from Houston
Oh no/ We gotta go/ Were not gonna live forever/ Why? Why? We gotta die/ You know that well be together/ Hey hey we gotta say/ I could never be a savior/ I know that you’ll miss me/ But I’m never never never/ Comin’ home
Bittersweet, but still kicking smeep.
I hope you've enjoyed the mix. But now I want to hear your ideas in the form of movies, video games, songs, tv shows and the like. Discuss!
