Well it's a graphic novel, which is basically a fancy name for a really long comic book. But it's actualy a legitimate genre, and from what I hear you can find some real gems if you know what to look for. ;D

I just wanted to cut in and say how much I utterly loved this movie!!! I had to search far and wide for a copy of the director's special 2 disc edition of this movie, but man oh man was it ever worth it!!! Johnny's absolutely fabulous in it!! *yeah, like he isn't always?* I absolutely love the accent!! I'm not British or anything, and I'm definitely not from the 19th century, I don't think, but I think he does an excellent job!!! But the ending!! Gah!! Sooo sad!!!! Here's a little quote I made up that I think fits this movie well. At least, I'm pretty sure I made it up. One can never tell these days... "Don't go chasing the dragon unless you're willing to catch it."

Yes the directors cut is worth the find, Im glad you like the movie so much! Its odd but the first time I saw it I didnt like it, but that had to do with the directors take on the Jack the ripper story, now I love it and I love all the angles that they threw into the plot. Johnny is AMAZING at accents I think its one of his stronger points. Welcome!

Johnny is AMAZING at accents. I think its one of his stronger points. Welcome! Though I agree... his accent in From Hell could have used a tidge of work. I'm being particularly technical, but I have a knack for accents and have to know things like this. His accent in From Hell is a bit too lower-class for my liking. Abberline is upper middle class and wouldn't talk like that. BUT if Abberline DID have a lower class accent, well, it's flawless.

What I liked most about the movie was the detail they put into it. The stories, the sets, the props, everything was as close as accurate to the actual time period that they could make it. They even took the oginial crime scene photographs and plotted out their scenes around them. That takes dedication. Thanks for the welcome 20th C.G. I'm glad to be here!!! To G.G. I don't know enough about accents to know what kind it was, but I believe you when you say it was a lower class one and it shouldn't have been. Perhaps they did it that way on purpose? Maybe it was to show that Abberline has more in common with the members of the lower classes than he does with his own? Or perhaps it was to show that he spends a lot of time with them. Or perhaps I'm digging too deep into it and he just used the wrong accent? Whichever. It was still an awesome movie that I liked more and more the more I saw it.

I have to agree with you Merrie that I think there was a reason for that particular 'cockney' accent. I know a few people who have a problem with it but Johnny tends to devote a lot of thought into his characters. And I too love how they used photos and even the letter that they suspected the real jack the ripper sent! At thanksgiving my brother is bringing me a book about Jack The Ripper I cant remeber the title of it off the top of my head but it is a recent one and was written by Patricia Cromwell(sp?) Who is/was a highly reputable forensics(sp?) person...I really look forward to reading it!

Oh yeah, I've heard of that book! Supposedly she solves the Ripper case once and for all and unmasks who he really was. It's interesting to read, especially since I'm into psychology and forensics, but I kind of like the mystery of not knowing who Jack the Ripper really was. It just seems more mysterious and creepy that way. He could have been anyone, and he could have never been caught. Very creepy. Anyway, that's just my opinon. Enjoy the book!!

Oooh this chick really solves the case? Do you know if it's solved based on hard evidence or circumstantial evidence (sorry, I'm a law nut)? I think it's safe to say it was a man of high class, most likely a doctor just based on the victims, but the last documentary I watched (which was awhile ago) basically said that nothing could be hard proven as there were no fingerprints, which sucks because I hate cases that don't get solved. I'm going to have to pick this book up too.

You know, I always wondered about that...why his accent was lower than his stature. There were definite similarities between the accent Johnny used for Abberline and the accent he used for Jack. (Although I think Abberline's was a bit more spot on than Jack's. ) I would very interested to know why that accent was chosen for Abberline.

A friend of mine from London said he believe Jack Sparrow's accent more authentic than Abberline's. He really, really likes From Hell, but the accents piss him off.

I think Jack was meant to be more of a varied accent, like one who's traveled many places. Abberline I have no explanation for.....perhaps it was the absinthne?
