I did not enjoy the ending...it wasn;t even just that he dies...I mean that was bad enough but they had to make it all dishonorable because he died from the drugs and your like well its his own smeep fault but what the heck? I don't know, I was mad.

I dont think he does, Im sure that when he chooses his roles its not based on weather or not his character is gonna die at the end, he just does it for the character, hes good at that. but who knows.. all I know is that this ending.. is almost just like.. tearful.. I mean when I first saw this movie, I literally screamed "NO WAY!!" lol.. so yeah

Yaah, totally tearful. I let my pal Stephanie borrow my VHS of "From Hell" (she be a fellow Depper) and she flipped when she saw it, too. Even my freinds who aren't huge Johnny fans say they hated the ending...waah!!!! FRED!!! NOOO!!!

I just watched the film for the first time and I am honestly shaking! I felt really sad about the ending, I kinda hoped that after all the awfullness and conspiricy he would be happy living in that cottage place. I had heard that it was gory, but I didnt actually find it that bad, the very first killing, when the knife just flashes, freaked me out, the digusting behaviour of the Londoners disturbed me but I did not feel sick.

I was not especially disturbed by the gore. I just wouldn't want to watch this movie while eating, ya know? I also didn't mind the ending at first. What can I say--I was young and ignorant and not yet a real Johnny fan. Seeing it again after I started to appreciate him made me realize what a horribly depressing movie it is. Abberline's job sucks. He has to deal with poverty and horrendous crimes everyday. The people who work for him are incompetant. His boss is an ignorant, elitist, racist snob who's actually conspiring against him. On top of all this, he is grieving the loss of his wife AND son. So he becomes an opium addict because it's his only escape from the pain of living. Then by some miracle he meets this woman he likes and helps her escape to Ireland. But does he get to be with her? Oh, no. He can't. So he gets to live the rest of his life knowing that she is out there waiting for him. That right there would be enough. But then he kills himself. And no, it does not make me feel better that Mary got to go off and be happy. I didn't care about her at all! If I'd written the script, SHE would be the one who got killed and that little girl would go and live with Abberline. (I know he probably wasn't in the best shape to be raising a kid, but at least it would have given him a reason to live. )

Guess the message is "life's a smeep & then you die". Sadly often true & although I was so upset at this ending I guess it proved the depths this man was prepared to go to in order to protect those he loves; same as in The Brave. Seems a theme, one of many, that Johnny has enjoyed exploring often in his movies. Still brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it.

I agree with everything you said, but... I mean altho I didnt fancy Marys character.... I dont think she should of died, I just wish that Fred wouldnt of, but it was a fairly decent ending.... Guess the message is "life's a pregnant dog & then you die". Ive noticed that in alot of his movies too... You gotta love him for it.. but still makes yah cry
