I would have sent a letter to Mary saying pack your bags, baby, we are moving to *insert exotic foreign country*. I believe that the Masons would pursue him to Ireland but not overseas. If he wanted to be absolutely sure, he could even fake his own death before he left.
If leaving the country wasn't an option, there were plenty of women in London. Falling for Mary should have made him realize that he was at least capable of loving someone again. That is a big step. Maybe if hadn't been spending so much time in opium den, he could have met someone else.
Why this did not occur to Abberline: He was a depressed drug-addict. When you are depressed, you tend to forget about your options (those not involving suicide or misery, that is). Opium is a DEPRESSant; it may let you have cool visions but it's not going to elevate your mood. That makes it all the more dangerous for people who are already depressed (same goes for alcohol).
I feel terrible for him, but at the same time I hope his wife kicked his skinny butt around a little bit when he got up there. ;D

Oh no! Storyline confusion ;D The girl who got killed in bed was the French girl (one of Mary's friends paid to spend the night with her). The Ripper thought he had killed Mary but Abberline realised that the girl had brown hair not red, like Mary's. Is that all clear now? I never remember names but I could look them up if that would help!

If I really was concerned for my loved one, I would probably do what Abberline did. I just watched the movie the other day, and I mean, he truly loves Mary. So much so he would end his own life....he knew the Masons were going to watch his every move and he didn't feel like bringing down Mary with him. While suicide is a very selfish thing, I think he made the right choice. He knew he could never have Mary and that pain was far worse than anything.
If I were in his position, I would probably do the same. It's a very hard thing to answer, but I really would do the same.
