yes, exactly!! ugh! i would probably have ran off.... nobody really appreciates Gilbert and what he does.. And they're all saying Gilbert doesn't do anything for Arnies birthday, but look at all the other things he's doing!! Exactly he holds that family and then they complain! He seems to be the only one that works and looks after Arnie so he is the only one bringing in income they dont give him enough credit.

It was frusterating to me that his family didn't give him any credit because in reality Gilbert had basically given up having a normal life just so Arnie could have one.
Ciao Telluride

Poor Gilbert. I just wanted to make the family realise how much he did for them. But Momma did say he was her knight in shimmering armour so she appreciated him in the end Gilbert was wonderful with Arnie. You're completely right TuR, everything Gilbert did was for his brother. What an angel.

Me too Lynx! ;D It makes me soooo happy ( I usually shed a tear or two ) during the "Knight in Shimmering Armor" scene with Momma. Gilbert definitely deserves the title! I think it is so fun to watch Gilbert grow as a person throughout the movie. He starts out rather sarcastic, and he blows Becky off kind of a lot, and then as the movie progresses he learns that is is OK to need someone and to open up. (It is really noticeable in the way he says goodbye when he leaves Becky's presence multiple times throughout the movie. You can almost mark the changing point.) Did anyone else notice this?

Yes, I noticed I think he felt guilty for spending time with her, but later he realised that it was ok for him to have a good time too. And that horrible married woman doesn't help...can't remember her name!

No worries Mrs. Betty Carver doesn't deserve a name... or anything!!! Eww I hated her. So that was a good line for me to use for your new siggy eh? ;D I chose well... I hadn't even seen that post TR... that's ironic!! He is a shimmering knight!!

Did anyone else feel just terrible for Gilbert when Betty Carver said that the only reason she picked him was because he would never leave, that he would always be there? Its like...she didn't even care. I don't know, did anyone else get that vibe? And Roo-Yup, you sure did pick a perfect line for my siggy...one of my favorites!

Yes, I got that vibe Telluride! She was only thinking of herself, and not caring how Gilbert felt about the whole situation, what a sick old woman! I think she could benefit from some seriously intensive therapy sessions or something... I HATE HER!

Therapy sessions are just what she needs BP. Taking away the innocence of someone half her age She was definitely NOT my favorite character!!

Stemming from the subject of Betty Carver---did anyone else feel terrible for her children? All she ever did was tell them to go away, and the Dad was rather violent towards them (the whole trampoline and pool incidents... ). Poor kids!

Yeah! I felt so bad for them when she kept telling them to go outside and play whenever Gilbert came in the room Poor kids. Their dad was only trying to do what was best, but I agree, that scene where he was making them get in the kiddy pool was not fun! That was such a sad scene, with Mr Carver realising that whatever he did was never going to make his wife happy You've got to feel a little sorry for him at least.

The first time I saw the movie (before I had read the book) I definitely felt bad for Mr. Carver because not only was his wife cheating on him, but nothing he did could make her happy. After reading the book though, I no longer felt bad for Mr. Carver because you find out that he was cheating on Mrs. Carver too...so he is just as bad as she is! So now whenever I see the movie I just feel bad for the entire family that it somehow had to reach this point.

Yes I felt terribly for her children, they did nothing to deserve that! Kids should grow up with loving children, and Mr. Carver appeared to want to please his children by getting them everything they desired, but he lacked the emotional and physical love towards them...

Mr. Carver appeared to want to please his children by getting them everything they desired, This is true, but I think he bought them whatever they desired just to make himself look good. He wanted to look wealthy and look like he had the perfect family. Thats just my opinion.
