I believe he was cheating on his wife in the book... not the movie....and Gilbert saw him cheating... Another reason to watch the movie and read the book!

Oh I was only speaking of how it was portrayed in the movie, but yes I remember that from the book... and in that case he'd be wrong to be smeeped...

Heehee Roo, in my mind the book and the movie are together, because I can see it happening, even if it didn't in the movie. Sorry to have confused you! Oops! *bad TuR, BAD*

Would you have spent time with Becky vs. Arnie? Would you have gone back for Arnie's birthday party? Would you have lit your house on fire? Would you have hit Arnie? ETC.... I don't know how I would cope with Arnie. I admire Gilbert so much for looking after him so well, because no matter what mistakes he made he was still the one who looked after Arnie day after day. I think I would have wanted to spend more time with Becky but that would have meant leaving Arnie, and no one else in the family was as good at looking after him as Gilbert. I would definitely have gone back for the birthday party. Arnie had been looking forward to it for ages, and it was a big occasion for everyone. Yes, I would like to think I would have set my house on fire. Gilbert did it for all the right reasons, and the whole family were in agreement about it. That was one of the most touching scenes when Ellen started crying because she thought there was going to be a crowd around their mother. It was Gilbert's frustration and the tiring nature of looking after Arnie day after day that led to Arnie being hit and although I would love to say I wouldn't do it, that would be a lie. Arnie did not deserve it, but we are only human after all. Poor Arnie, poor Gilbert Oh, TuR, Mr Carver definitely freaked me out

Than kyou for such a thorough answer Lynx! It's awesome to know what other people would do given a certain amount of circumstances... I'm trying to form up some other questions related to the movie... usually I'm good but I think I need to go watch it again. (shucks ;D) Oh no TR you weren't bad!!

I started crying when Ellen did, because throughout the whole movie she had this self centered-ness and sarcasm and she always acted like she didn't care. But when she cries for her mother, you see just how human she really is, and how she must have been holding these feelings back and showing indifference as a mask . Very powerful to me.

I think I would have spent time with Becky too. If he left Arnie at home, someone would watch over him. I would be ashamed because of the whole hitting Arnie thing and it would be difficult to face everyone after running away, but I'd have to go back. I would've found it hard to light the house on fire. I don't think I'd be able to do it, even though she is dead. It would've been worse if he didn't burn it down though. Also, I'd be worried about the fire spreading out of control. I'm such a chicken. I probably would've hit Arnie too. I would be frustrated if I had to watch him everyday too. I doubt that would've happened if they all took turns watching him. It put a big strain on Gilbert.
