If you were Gilbert... would you made all of the same choices he did... or was there something he did you would have done differently given his current situation described in the movie.
Example... Would you have spent time with Becky vs. Arnie? Would you have gone back for Arnie's birthday party? Would you have lit your house on fire? Would you have hit Arnie? ETC....

Well some of those discisions are hard to make... cause I haven't been in the situation he was in. As far as clapping Arnie and spending more time with Becky... I just think Gilbert had had to deal with Arnie so much and he just wanted to get away from the whole situation ya know? ... so I wish I could say no I would be more caring to Arnie... but it would be a hard promise to keep...
And regarding the burning his house down question... that is a really hard question!!! If you look at the reasons that he did... it seems like a good and respectable thing to do... but I don't know if I would be able to burn my house down... especially with my mom inside (even though she is dead)
good idea for a thread!

Roo asked: Example... Would you have spent time with Becky vs. Arnie? Would you have gone back for Arnie's birthday party? Would you have lit your house on fire? Would you have hit Arnie? *settles in her chair to begin her Gilbert discussion* Well... As far as spending time with Becky vs. Arnie, I would have to say that Gilbert needs some time to himself that he can do whatever he wants with. If he chooses to hang out with Becky...go for it! Of course I would go back for Arnie's birthday party...he is the big 1 8... and I love parties!!! And I could never intentionally miss a siblings birthday party...especially when it meant so much to them. As far as hitting Arnie... I wouldn't intentionally say YEAH I WANNA HIT HIM...but I can see why Gilbert does it. Not that hitting is the answer...but you know what I mean. I think burning the house down is definitely the best way for GIlbert to "bury" his mother. He did not want her to be a laughingstock...and the only other option would be to do it privately...with a fire. Excellent thought-provoking questions Roo!!

I loved the burning of the house. It so honored their mother--and it was a decision they came to as a family.

Yes, I agree it did honour her mother... respected her wishes... when she was alive she never wanted to be a joke... and they didn't let her... and in a way it's a proper burial...
(Was the father still dead in the basement? Cause Arnie kept saying "Dad's in there.... OOOOOOO" ....so were they burrying both of their parents?)

No, no. The father had a proper burial...Arnie was just convinced he was still in there...Arnie wouldn't go in the basement, so he would never find out.

Oh yes that's right... because at Mr. Carver's funeral Arnie is sitting by his father's grave... I remember that... I just didn't get why Arnie kept insisting that his father was in the basement... that threw me off a bit.
;D
Thanks Tur... can always count on you for Gilbert related!

If you were Gilbert would you have called Mr. Carver right back? Or put it off as he did?

I hate to disagree with Gilbert...but I would have called him back right away...because I wouldn't want Mr. Carver getting ideas about why I wasn't calling. Does that make any sense at all?
Did Mr. Carver freak anyone else out?

Yes that makes any sense... No he didn't freak me out... I thought he reacted rather well to all that was happening.... I would have been extremely smeeped.... ;D

In the book he was cheating with his receptionist the whole time. Can I count the book?
