Just wondering who everyone's favorite is and why. The characters are so well developed in this movie...
My favorite is Arnie, just because he is so sweet and innocent. But I also really like Ellen and her sarcasm...she cracks me up.

Great idea for a thread TuR! I Lime it very much! ;D My favourite was definitely Amy. She always tried to help Gilbert until she was beyond her rope and couldn't handle it any longer. She was a very .... dynamic character that is easily related to... I could very much see myself reacting in the same ways she did in the given circumstances. Must agree that Ellen was hysterical!!

Amy I think I would get along with her the best. I loved Arnie but I do not have Gilbert's endless patience...he's a saint As for Ellen, she would have annoyed me so much! Thought she was very funny though

Must agree there, I wouldn't have been able to tolerate Arnie very long, I'm sure that sound horrible, but I am being bluntly honest.... And feel awful for saying so. Plus, Amy can make cakes --You're right, Gilbert is a Saint!---

LOL Roo! If cake baking is in your criteria for picking friends, then I'm afraid I'm out! All of Ellen's sarcastic comments sound so much like something I would say to my siblings (I hope that doesn't make me sound like a bad person , but nobody can be nice ALL the time, right? ) "Ok, DAD. Right, DAD."

Nah definitely not my criteria, but definitely a nice bonus... perk what have you No that doesn't make you a bad person, I just would hate living with sarcasim all the time... it's nice relief in a movie, but would make me terribly sad in life to relate that way.

No kidding. Good thing I'm not sarcastic all the time, then There had to be some comic relief in the movie, and in some ways, Ellen was it. That was some wonderful writing. *Hats off to Mr. Peter Hedges*

Yes you're right if there was none I can honestly say I wouldn't have liked the film as much... it would have been much too depressing..

I picked Amy.... She is the most helpful and she isn't really mean to people.... She is a good character

Wow, I really didn't think my opinion was going to be shared by so many people.
But Amy was so sweet.
"Amy where's Arnie?" "I don't know.. I haven't seen him, I thought he was with you"

But Amy was so sweet. "Amy where's Arnie?" "I don't know.. I haven't seen him, I thought he was with you" I love when her and Gilbert did that.... It was so sweet...and good for Arnie.

I also thought it was cool when she said that...it was like she was forgiving Gilbert without saying "I forgive you." Very sweet ;D I loved all of the characters...they are so dynamic.

They seemed to have a deep conection, the two that dealt with Arnie the most and had to work together... they came up with wonderful ways of dealing with such a difficult task (I hate to call Arnie that... but in reality I would have to agree with the statement) I wish we had gotten to know Gilbert's eldest brother... and maybe a bit of his father before the suicide... That would have added many new dimensions.

In the book we find out that Gilbert's brother is "the one who got away." He got out of Endora and he was loathe to come back, even for just a visit, though he does come back briefly for Arnie's birthday. Losing both her son and her husband, I can see why Mama has such a strong hold on the family. She probably feels as if one by one they are "disappearing" on her. She can't let go. I wish they would have included the oldest brother's visit in the movie...

In the book we find out that Gilbert's brother is "the one who got away." Yeah that exact same line is used by Gilbert in the film when he is narrating and we get a glimpse of his brother's photo on the refridge. But it would have been nice for a reunion I agree. I wouldn't want to go back to a mother overpowering like that....
