Okay... I've been thinking about this and not sure whether or not to make a thread about it... What do you think Gilbert's father was like? Other than what was described... what do you think were qualities about him? I wish the book or movie would have given us a scene with him before his death...

Good idea for a thread Roo!!! ;D All we know about Mr. Grape is what Gilbert tells us: that he never wanted to play and that he was there but he wasn'.t I wonder what it is about his life that got him so down. Perhaps he, like Gilbert, had wanted to get out of Endora but felt trapped because he now had his family there. Thats my ;D

A dad who never wanted to play That's really sad I reckon he was the depressive type, Endora seems to breed them...*shudders* I wouldn't like to live there.....unless Gilbert was there of course

I don't think I could live in the downtown part of Endora, but certainly out in the country... I couldn't stand living in a city or populated area... they are nice to visit, vacation to... but I like seclusion... I know most of people are the opposite... perhaps that's what drove him to depression... Understandable

Everyone's different ;D I have the best of both worlds really...I don't live right in the centre of the city but I am close to shops, and all types of city entertainment...but I'm also close to a huge park and a short ride away is the country. I would prefer to live in a more countrified area though. I think the stale, and oppressive nature of a town like Endora would drive me mad. Everyone knows your buisness and everyone has an opinion on what you should be doing but no one really cares. Not nice.

In that reguard I would go out of my mind... I can't stand snoopers... lol We used to have a neighbor like that at our old house, dashing her nose into EVERYONE's business I just can't believe Mr. Grape took the easy way out... you should fight for everything in life... At least that's what I do...

You really think suicide is the easy way out? You have to be pretty desperate....

Ick I hate snoopy people. Not fun. You would indeed have to be pretty desperate to commit suicide. But didn't he think of what he was leaving behind? A family who loved him? Couldn't he see that it would destroy his family? I feel bad for him, but at the same time, I want to shake my fist at him and tell him to look at what he was doing to his family, you know? Such a sad situation!

At least that's what I do... Perhaps that didn't come across right, but yes I do think it's the easy way out "the cowards way out" ....instead of working out your problems and dealing with life head on you kill yourself so things will go away... There have been numerous times I would have loved to do that, but instead I've fought to get where I am today, and will continue to fight.... But I do realize that Mr. Grape and I have very different obsticals to over come in life... but I would relate it to any problem...

I definately always wondered what drove Mr. Grape over the edge... I was guessing he just couldn't deal with ...dealing with everything I guess... I wonder if all the kids were as much help when he was sitll alive? If Gilbert helped with Arnie and if Amy really helped that much... I was also thinking that maybe he couldn't deal wiht Arnie anymore and deal wiht the rest of the family... but I definately dont think he should have commited suicide!! As Roo said... I think it's taking the ... less mature way out... I dunno how to word it... but he deifnately should have been a man and worked it out... not just killing himself and leaving everyone else to sort out his problems.

Hmmm.... maybe he killed his self because of the family? It would be hard to have a kid like Arine but not something to kill yourself over...... Maybe it was being stuck in the town.... That's what I think.

Okay... the town thing is up again. Well when Mr Grape killed himself, Momma was still petite and pretty... so why the smeep didn't they get the smeep out of the smeeping town then!? When momma could have moved out.... why the smeep did they stay if that was the source of their problems!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.......... That's what I would have done

Perhaps money was an issue? They wouldn't get much for selling the house...and if he was only making a modest living or oh, say, working at Lamson's Grocery ( ) he wouldn't have had the money to move the entire family. I dunno that just popped out of my fingers before I could think about it

Yes money sure could have been a factor... But I would guess that Mr. Grape worked... Momma may even have worked at that time. Amy worked at a school cooking... until it burned down ( .... that always cracked me up.... I wonder WHY it burned down --then they show her throughing backingsoda on the stove!!) And Ellen worked at the icecream shop.... But then again, we never see Arnie going to the doctor, but I know how expensive medical bills can be... Just got a HEFTY one from Mayo clinic. (where Johnny has been )

It was pointed out that Ellen and Amy had jobs...but when Mr. Grape was alive, Ellen was in diapers and Amy would have been like 10. So their incomes wouldn't be there. It would have been daddy and momma's... And good point Roo, I bet Arnie's medical bills are astronomical... Do they ever say what Momma did for a living? Or was she a stay at home mom? *rushes off to watch again* I can't believe I don't remember!
