I think it's possible that she killed him, i mean she wasn't happy with him otherwise she wouldn't have had an affair with Gilbert and she didn't seem that upset when he drowned, she seemed rather relieved

Maybe I am not sure I felt kinda sorry for her cause she was in an unhappy marriage but that is no reason to kill someone. But I don't like her cause freaking was a dirty old lady leave poor gilbert alone. ;D

I don't think she killed him but I think perhaps she was aware that he was dying and deliberately chose not to help because she saw his death as the answer to her unhappiness. She certainly wasn't a very happy woman.

Yeah, she definately WAS NOT happy with him. If she did leave him to die i don't blame her cause everyone deserves happiness, but she could have filed for a divorce or something

But in the time that the movie was set in divorce might not have been an option. Personally I think she did kill him.

You're right, Roxie. Divorce probably wasn't an option in the sense it is today. In a small town where everyone knows everything the scandal would have been huge.

I suppose, she could have left him and moved away or something... She was in a difficult situation really cause if she did leave him she wouldn't have any money and she wouldn't have anywhere to go

Betty did not kill her husband. I don't believe that for a minute! She had security and a sexy boy-toy. The perfect life! hehe
Seriously, the film pretty much had me thinking she was just an innocent victim of her husband's random and tragic accident.

But then again there is one thing I don't get, at the funeral of her husband and after that she goes into the shop where Gilbert works and she asks Gilbert for some ciggerates with menthol in them, and then she says while Gilbert lits her ciggerate she says I miss him, and I don't I miss him and I don't. She says that twice, so on one hand I think she might have seen him die but decided not to call for help and on the other hand I have a feeling she didn't saw it at all.

Hmm, it is a hard one, but I personally don't think that she killed him. I don't think the writers even new whether she killed him.

Even the writers did not know if they wanted it that she killed him. I need to read the book. Does it address this issue in the book?

I really don't know, I thought she did because she was unhappy in her marriage and at that point she lost Gilbert - maybe losing Gilbert drove her to kill her husband.
That's a good theory, it's likely that happened.
I guess, we'll never know.
