The Rum Diary is about err rum and Rum and RUM and did I mention rum? A bunch of journalists in Costa Rica ? can't remember, somewhere in Sth America anyway who write for a paper/mag and how they spend their days trying to get out of working by drinking 24/7, mostly rum, which is really cheap down there for some reason. It follows a few of the characters so there are 5 or 6 stories going at the one time. The books good, I enjoyed it, hope the movie gets made soon.

Have I waited long enough? ;D Sorry I didn't answer sooner.
No its not a true story, but Hunter started it back in 1959. Its set in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

It most definitely should be. Unfortunately, this is not good news. Straight from beniciodeltoro.com, the movie's just a bit father away from being made. It no longer has a director as of January 26th. www.beniciodeltoro.com/latest/archives/2004_1.php

Aww man, that means the release date will be further pushed down, and it won't have that tinge of Benicio in it, unless he agrees to at elast act in it *le sigh*

I know and even that seems in doubt right now. Didn't Fear and Loathing take an ugly amount of time to make as well? Not boding well.

Maybe we should call up Terry Gilliam and see if he's busy? But that might not help things become certain, now would it?

That's really too bad that Benicio isn't directing...ooh, but Terry would do such a good job......

Yeah, Terry could make it happen. As long as there's no windmills involved.

windmills?

I'll try to explain it Obsessed.. When Terry directed the Don Quixote movie and all the disasters happened, someone blamed it on the windmill in the opening sequence of what was shot. Lost In La Mancha was made about it all. So as long as no windmills are involved if Terry takes over The Rum Diary there should be no problems.

Maybe we could start a petition to get Terry as a director and speed this thing up.
