Does anyone have the time or patience to explain to me how FTP works? I've been thinking about getting a site and being hosted by someone, but I have no clue what FTP is. I've been reading some tutorials about it, and from what I've read, FTP stands for File Transfer Protocal. You sign into your servor, and you have to transfer your files into your servor for the stuff to come up on your site. So if it was for HTML scripts, it would be in a document and then transfered using the FTP to your site. Still confused...

I've never had my own domain before, but I have been hosted by others. I dont do it much anymore though, because I've lost 2 sites because the person didnt tell me they were getting rid of their domain. Always have back up files! I learned the hard way... Anyway, you get a program, I used Leechftp (cause it was free). You give the host a username and password that you make up. They will give you other information too so you can sign in, like the host or URL. they set it up, and you sign in, you may browse your computer for your html files or pictures, etc. Or there is a button that lets you upload files from the actual internet. Once you find the right files you want, just grab and drag them over to the identical box right next to where your files are located. Now all your files will have that new URL. Its kinda hard to explain, but if you just try it once, I'm sure you can figure it out. I didnt know anything about it, and I just got someone to host me, and it worked fine.

Hmm. So how would you go about with DIV layers and other HTML? Do you just put them in a notepad, save it, and when you sign into your FTP, drag them over to the identical box? BTW, thanks for responding in the first place. I'd like to say sorry for any stupid questions I may ask beforehand

Hi, my name is CC, and I am FTP challenged. HF, I so totally don't get it either. Yeah, I know what it stands for, and I know that it's some type of file transfer and I know you need a program to do it... but that's about it. Oh, and I need to learn it. Yeah. Sarah, you know how?! Omg, teach me!! *composes self* Sorry, I just can't find anyone who can explain it in a way that I get (which is hugely frustrating because I am usually very quick to get stuff!). Where can I get this free program?

I'm not sure if Leech FTP is really the best, but hey, its free! You can download it here--EDIT-- (Link didnt work right, I fixed it) I dont think you can open notepad and do it on that, but you know I've never tried! You have to save your files as an html document. I just open microsoft works and save as type 'html document'. Then you just take your files and slide them to the other side...But you have to have a person host you first or it wont let you slide your files.

Hmm. *still confused*
I have a web host. All of my files are saved as html documents. But I upload them one at a time to the host... is that FTP? I don't have a program on my computer for that. Or is it that FTP allows you to upload multiple things at once? Or is it not uploading at all?
*tears hair out*

Hmm... maybe. Where do you go to upload your files at? At a particular site? And yes, w/FTP you can upload your files fast, all you have to do is grab and slide. It hardly takes anytime at all, and yep you can do more than 1 at a time. lol I might be confusing you more, sorry I'm not really good at explaining.

Nah, you're doing fine... just keep on explaining. I have hosting with the local cable company Cox. I go their site, enter my email and password, and then I can browse my computer to upload a file, one at a time. The files can be html files, picture files, css files, and others. Does that sounds like FTP? Can you only do html files in FTP?

No in FTP you can upload any types of files.
You know come to think of it, I think AOL has a ftp service thats free. So I bet Cox probably has free FTP as well sice you are a customer. So yes I bet you use FTP, just that yours is a kind of online program...Not sure though, but it Does sound like one...

No there are other ways. Does your service let you download files to your computer? Cause in FTP you can upload your files, and also download files from your host's directory or practically anything on the internet (if you know the URL and its not blocked)

Ok, I'm back into trying to use FTP for my site. I've got a host, I've got a FTP servor downloaded and my host address and all the information is in, and I've been connected. I saved my HTML in a word document as an HTML document and then slid it over to the other side. But when I go to my site, it says "No INDEX.HTML Page Found Getting Started" Meaning that I haven't uploaded anything. Whats wrong?
