I think that the Beatles were heavily inspired by the Beat culture (John Lennon in particular), and I think even vice versa. As far as beat literature, I would suggest Jack Kerouac, Alan Ginsberg, and ... *the name escapes me* I haven't read any myself, but from what I gather they were the guys. If I'm correct, The Source (a film where Depp plays Kerouac, which I have NOT seen), is about that type of culture, but then again, I don't really know. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Beatles, and used to read everything I could get my hands on about them and the 60s. Ginsberg and Kerouac where names that I came across a lot. Now that I have rambled on... Thompson (again, I have not read), I believe, is writing about what happened to the beat culture when the 60s were over. When "Peace, Love & Rock and Roll" is over, now what do we do? At least that's what I'm getting out of it. Did I answer anything?

Thanks for that. I suspected there was something like that in it so I shall now add some other stuff to my Xmas list for a certain person & then I shall probably steal it!!! According to the DVD the 3rd person is William S Burroughs & we shall definitely watch it today (The Source) & report back if anyone is interested. Can't belive I didn't know this stuff as it was my time so to speak but less of that or you will know how ancient I really am.

Hehe, I glad I could be of some service. Can't wait to hear what you think of The Source! I wish I could find it somewhere myself...

Well we have almost watched the source. Very little Johnny, reading (but memorised if you know what I mean) but the quality is very poor & it is difficult to understand due to this as it is a series of extracts from readings, interviews etc which seem quite old. However, it does offer an insight into the "Beat" movement, the thought finally occured to me that the beatles probably derived their names from this but then I was never a Beatles fan...preferring the Rolling Stones as they were far more outrageous ! Our copy came from Amazon (in US!!!) so was the best & not a used one so personally think it is one to possible miss unless you want the insight into the Beat culture.

I'm fascinated with the Beats and that whole era, why they did what they did, etc. I've dug Kerouac, Ginsberg (my mother's trying to get me to read Burroughs' 'Naked Lunch' ) and I suppose I probably should look into The Source. I've also gotten into Hunter quite a bit recently and his style is sort of a commentary for a particular time (in F&L, the late 60's, early 70's). In fact, I think I could compare it to On the Road in some respects (it's been awhile since I've read On the Road though, so don't hold me to it ). As for how everything ties in with the Beatles, I'm clearly not the person to consult. Age just isn't a factor as far as this stuff is concerned.

Hmm, now that I think about it... I'm pretty sure that the Beatles didn't have that in mind when they came up with the name. I think it had more to do with the beat of Rock and Roll music (which they all loved) and something do to with a Marlon Brando movie from the 50s. I've seen clips of it (couldn't tell you the name) and it has something to do with a pack of motorcyclers. But I'll bet that later on, they liked the reference to the Beat culture.

Funny you should mention the Brando movie as that excerpt is in the source! Is it from On the Waterfront? Never saw it but have seen clips many times. Seems to me that it is all linked & probably that the "Beat" began with the beat in poetry ie rhythm? Guess there is no doubt that these 3 shook things up & created a new era so to speak. Thinking about some famous UK events e.g. Glastonbury etc guess they are all related. I moved to Italy for 10 years at age 17 & all these things seemed to sort of pass me by

You lucky thing although I would love to be younger & without the aches & pains & failing body I feel sorry for today's young people as I get the feeling there is nothing new out there for them. Most of it seems to have been done starting with the Beats!

Indeedy, it's not a fun thing to be terribly young in this day and age. Far too much drivvel for my piece of mind in the system, but I know I'm probably being a little too critical. That's more or less the reason I turn towards the past in terms of culture: it just seems a lot more intelligent, even 15 years ago. One of my favorite people said that if he could put his 40 year-old mind in his 15 year-old body, he'd rule the world. ;D But I digress.
Wasn't the movie The Wild One? Or am I thinking of another one?

Wasn't the movie The Wild One? Or am I thinking of another one? THAT'S THE ONE! Thanks for that... I could not remember! ;D Or is it The Wild Ones? Ah, who cares. That's the one. That's a good point, you guys.... there really isn't anything of that kind around today. Nothing that I would consider signing on with... perhaps that's why we all spend so much time on the computer! ;D Or maybe that's not the the reaction... maybe that's the cause... wow, it's getting a little too deep in here. So what were we talking about?

Has anyone else read Thompson's other books? I know I've gotten all of them for Christmas... I just have to wait to open them....

I haven't read all of them, but I think I've read most of them. I love The Good Doctor. ;D He's so eccentric... and it's like a history lesson that you don't really feel your learning, if that makes any sense. Very amusing and enlightening stuff. I asked for the Rum Diary in Spanish for Christmas, does that make me excessively weird?
