Ok ladies, I figured it was about time I put up a post discussing Hunter S. Thompson's book. It did come first after all. How many of you have read it? What did you think? Got any funny/scary anecdotes to share about your experiences reading it? This is the place!

I've read this book probably more times than any other novel. lol Hunter's writing style is awesome, and I just love the way it seems to overflow with craziness and insanity. You just totally get that essence of rampant chaos right from the very (infamous) first line: "We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold." I actually had a very hard time getting this book. Not because it was hard to find, but my stepfather actually took a course on Hunter, so he was very familiar with his work, and didn't want me reading it... But I bought it anyway. And I'm so glad I did. The book is funny, profound, stirring, and absolutely nuts; definitely up there in my top five favorites.

Wow, that's really interesting, because my father actually give me his rather worn copy of it!! You should really see my copy, the cover looks as if it's been chewed, the pages are dog eared, it's great!!! ;D
Anyway, I absolutely love this book, and am now reading it again. Little lines like this are what makes this book so much fun to read! :
"Saturday morning...Memories of this night are extremely hazy. All I have, for guide-pegs, is a pocketful of keno cards and cocktail napkins, all covered with scribbled notes. Here is one: "Get the Ford man, demand a Bronco for race-observation purposes...photos?...Lacerda/call...why not a helicopter?...Get on the phone, lean on the smeepers...heavy yelling."
I love this book! ;D

I had to search for mine a bit, but that's not to say it will be hard finding a copy. Check your local chain and used bookstores, and if that fails, I know you can purchase a copy from www.amazon.com. Hope this helps, and I'm glad you're reading the book! It's wonderful!

I love this book; I really, really do. My favorite quote that I can remember offhand that wasn't in the movie was something to the effect of, "Old elephants limp off to the hills to die; old Americans go out to the highway and drive themselves to death with huge cars." Rather interesting visual.

Until we bought the film & read about Johnny had never heard about Hunter, Kerouc etc but have a DVD to watch with readings etc from Kerouc...do they connect at all? I know Johnny was heavily influenced by them..Beat culture etc would that equate to The Beatles in UK? Thanks for any info may be ideas for Xmas for someone I know!!!
