Donnie Brasco is one brilliant film you can never get tired of. The first time I saw it was with my brother a few months ago I believe, and wow, I couldn't stop drooling over Johnny hehe. Johnny and Al Pacino togather in one movie? Whoever did the casting must be one heck of a genius. Aww, and you derno how much I felt bad fer Lefty at the end, which I'm not gonna say what happens in case someone hadn;t watched this movie yet But yea, Johnny and Al did amazing jobs, playing these characters. And to think, all the stuff in this movie was true, seeing how it IS a "Based on a True Story" movie. I think I might watch it again right now haha

Such a great movie--really pulls you into loving the "bad guys" who Donnie is infiltrating. What a brutal world the Mafia is, but a loyal one, if you play the game right. And...*sob*...LEFTY!!!

I absolutely adore this movie!! I can watch it over and over again without too much affect, although I do seem to say things like "yous guys" and "uoped" more than I probably should since I'm from the midwest and not a member of the Mafia. The acting in DB is splendid, and not just from Johnny, although I am a bit...biased...to his work. ;D The themes of a normal every day, "Joe, heh" FBI Agent getting caught up in a life of crime, infamy, and riches beyond imagining is very realistic and very well played. And I absolutely love the ending!! In my opinion, it leaves much for intrepretation! Is Joe really going to give up a life in the FBI for a life in the Mafia? "I'm not becoming like them, I am them," is that what he meant? Was Lefty going to kill Donnie after he killed Sonny Red's kid?? "I'm your best friend," Left says this, and as you may recall earlier, there was a famous line that when someone puts out a hit on you, it's your best friend who does it. So much to think about!! I love this movie!!! -FF

Wow, you guys really opened up nicely. I don't think I have anything to say that hasn't been said. ;D Other than of course that it is just a wonderful movie. Even if Johnny wasn't in it--which of course, and thankfully, he was--I'd still love it. Mafia movies to me are fascinating and extremely intense, how it's a sort of organized and even say "civilized" method of crime, and the fact that an ordinary guy is plunged into the underworld is so twisted. Joe gets a taste of this underworld and then he even finds that he identifies with the members of the Family even perhaps more than his true self, as an FBI agent. A lot of Mafia movies (like the Godfather) deal with "The Family" vs. Home family, like wife and kids. That's an incredible theme, and I love how Donnie Brasco takes it so to heart.

That was really got me. Just the fact that as the movie went along you could see Donnie/Joe struggling harder and harder to keep his head above water; to do right by his job, by his family, and by Lefty/his own personal code. You could see him desintigrating in front of your eyes, but there were still moments of incredible sweetness, like when he wakes his daughter up to hear her say her catachism. (sp? I'm sure I slaughtered that one) I was pleasantly surprised when I watched this movie, and I'm really glad I went ahead and did it.

Wonderful start to a new forum! I am always intrigued by the fact that Johnny was not the first, or even second (!!! ) choice for portraying Joe/Donnie. Somewhere in the extra features I watched, there is discussion of who they tried to get and why they didn't do it, etc... and how they came to get Johnny, and I'll bet they were glad they did! ;D

Oh yes, I'll bet they're so glad they picked Johnny! ;D I know that they were originally going to have Tom Cruise playing Joe...which would've been interesting, but I'm glad they went with JD. Plus I was also intrigued by the fact the makers of the movie said that this was the first movie where Johnny's character was actually more of a man than a boy; that he sort of matured (meaning the characters he'd played) on-camera. I thought that was cool. ;D

Tom Cruise! Now, to be honest, I haven't seen DB, but I really really really want to! I see it at stores all the time, but it's my thing to buy things on sale and renting isn't my thing so.... ...You don't understand exactly how long it took me to realize what fuhgeddaboudit was. I thought you spazzed or something...but now I get it. And it's sad because I say that occasionally... :trout:

Kind of to the point where my family wants to come after me with torches and pitchforks. But er, yeah...

I just saw this movie for the first time this past week, and I'm also glad I did. It was really interesting for me because it was about my heritage. I'm Italian and had (not have!! FUHGEDDABOUDIT! ) past relaitves in the Mafia. Not to mention my two most favourite actors of all time were in it. I abosmeeperely loved this movie. I loved the conflict Joe was having inside himself. About working for the FBI and knowing eventually he'd have to turn Lefty in. I'm just glad Lefty got hit before the feds caught up to him (as sad as that is to say). I LOVELOVELOVE this movie and anyone who hasn't seen it should.
