I was wondering what people thought of the difference between Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka and Johnny's. Which performance was your favorite? And furthermore, which differences between the two stood out to you most? --Edit by CQ & TM-- Personally we prefer RAPHAEL WONKA BUAHAHAHA CQ and TM run in and stash Raphael in the factory (being careful to disguise him as Willy)

I don't know... even Johnny said he thought Gene did a marvelous job with Wonka... *gets viciously punched in the arm by the angels* Ah, well, maybe you're more right than wrong there, JCD.

I hated Gene Wilder's version when I was little. He didn't become the character I had in my head from Roald Dahl's wonderful book, and his last line just turned my stomach...I like happy endings but that was too sickly sweet for words. So, yeah, I'm pretty firmly behind Johnny No great surprises there.

I just love the way Johnny played Willy. He just created something different. Different, but fantastic!
Actually I have to admit that I'm probably a little biased as I can't really remember that much from Gene's performance, so.. But then again, there must be a reason for why I don't remember much from his performance anymore, hehe!

Well yeah. I mean, if you compare the two, Johnny's character was so much more dimensional than Gene's. I think I gave Gene credit all these years because I was little and could accept whatever the movie gave me, but looking back on the first film now, all I see is a flat character. There's such a difference. Johnny's Willy was always putting on a show, and only sometimes gave you hints at a completely different Willy beneath his 'tv show personality.' Even all those creepy smiles, I meant to be an exaggerated mask of what Willy thinks the people expect. I love it. PS. Let's all hope Gene Wilder never stumbles across this thread.

Poor guy! He's not getting much support, is he? Sorry Gene but my opinion still stands

I actually was way more freaked out by Gene Wilder's performance then Johnny's I was actually crying at the end of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory but not out of sadness it was out of fear...of course it's been a while since I've seen the original version...but I did like the sets for the new one more.

Yep. Those had to be the best sets I've seen in a movie. No kidding. Power to Burtonization. Gene made you cry as a kid? That's shameful, man! Though, he was a bit freakish toward the end in that half-half office of his... Oh! But that brings up the subject! What do you think the new Willy Wonka office would have looked like had it been in the movie?

I couldn't stand the first version. The film had no flavour or interest to me. I wanted colour and vibrance. Johnny just made it so interesting and funny. I loved the music much more. It looks like he had so much fun with it. Definitely Johnny

I saw the first one when I was eight or nine, and I really did not like it. It scared me for the most part. The new one on the other hand was great, and Johnny did such a fantastic job, soooo much better than Gene's.

Well, I liked the original, but I have to say i like Johnny's version better. It was funnier for one thing. The original kind of lagged in parts.

I agree totaly with you guys. Johnny's Willy Wonka is much better (that at least is my opinion) I could now say what I think, but it was already said by you, so there's no need repeat it ;D Only that much: He was GREAT Kiss Kari

I think the movies were a bit to different to compair. Sure, Johnny did an awesome job as Willy Wonka, but Gene did an aweseome job too..... They are awesome in so many different ways.
