Agent Sands had only one thing going for him at the start of this film: Johnny Depp! I mean, what a rotten character! I was sooooo angry at him when he shot the cook. It was so wrong and evil. Soo...why is it by the end of the film we actually love this guy?? Yes, he's clever and funny and sharp, but he's still an indiscriminate, self-absorbed killer. Is it only because of Johnny? Or is it because he gets his comeuppance BIG TIME? The good and bad of Agent Sands...discuss!

Love him....hate him.....exactly!
I think it's more that just Johnny that we love about Agent Sands...I don't know exactly what it is though... But I have to say that Sands is such an intriguing character! We could spend days discussing this guy and still not know what to make of him...but you've gotta love him. *sigh*

I know I should hate him, but I just can't I suppose as an actress I look at that character and try to analyze him, thinking "wow, he must've had some real bad stuff happen to make him that way." And also, no one deserves what happened to him. I mean, who does that, anyway?

One good psychotic deserves another, I guess. I think the boy that befriends Sands does a lot to humanize him. It's almost odd how caring Sands is with the kid--although he does desperately need the kid's help. I love it when the kid won't shoot the gun, and Sands is forced to get more creative... "Right or left?!" "Derecha!" "Was that my right or your right?" " Mi derecha!" The fact that this child sees someone worthy of his help and the fact that Sands later protects him, endears the Agent to us in a way that wouldn't have been possible without the kid.

Hmmm, yeah I think you're on to something there, Dangerbabe... He does all kinds of horrible things throughout the movie, but when he needs help, he manages to find a way to not be such a jerk. Kinda like the old saying...a friend in need is a friend indeed.

Oh I definitely think the kid is his saving grace, so to speak. I mean, aside from actually saving his life, the kid, as you said, serves to humanize him in a way that we as an audience hadn't seen before.
I really do feel sorry for Sands though. It might just be my tendencies as na actress to analyse every character, but I see Sands as an abused child. He wasn't born like that, someone did something to him to make him so...you know.

January 20? Huzzah! Yes I did a character analysis of Sands. I turned it in for an English assignment actually, but it really was more to help me when writing him. If you want to read it, it's posted here. Of course, it's nearly all speculation on my part. But that's my job as an author; to fill in those gaps. It's also someting I'm used to doing as an actress.
