I hated him for shooting the cook and I loved El for trying to save the cook (by spitting out the pork as if it sucked). It was the humor and the kid who made Sands so attractive for me--not to mention Johnny's good looks! I also think he's paying for his sins HEAVILY by losing his eyes. That was a master stroke of justice by Rodriguez that gave great depth to the character as he struggled with his blindness. And, actually, Desperado is not off-topic for this thread, as long as it always comes back to Sands. However, the forum is open for threads on El Mariachi and Desperado, FYI.

I loved how rife the imagery was in this movie. I read an interview with Robert Rodriguez where he talked about the imagery. El is the Man With No Name, Barillo is the Man With No Face, and Sands is the Man With No Eyes. Interesting stuff. I also see a certain amount of phoenix imagery happening, in both El and Sands. El is described more than once as being dead, and Sands goes through a kind of death as well in losing his eyes. Excuse me while I run off to over-analyse again.

2nd viewing! ;D
I think that reading all those fics really colored my perceptions of good ol' Sheldon. After going back and watching the real story again, I think I have changed my mind about a few things...
1. Sands is not angsty. He is one tough s.o.b. He never once is feeling sorry for himself or whining about his problems. He may get a but testy when someone is clueless enough to not notice that he has blood dripping down his face from behind his sunglasses, but that just shows how sort of 'unaffected' he is. He still has all his wit, all his other faculties, and is still sharp as a tack. I can't see this guy sitting, bemoaning his blindness. No, he's still standing, still a killer, and as 'chicle boy' said...he'll be okay.
2. I haven't really come to my conclusion about whether he's a sociopath, or whatever else. I'm inclined to say no. But he's definitely got a screw or two loose upstairs. But I think it may have more to do with wanting to be always in control. He pulls the strings and makes things happen. And that gives him a bit of distance from what's actually happening and the actual danger. Therefore, he tends to be rather arrogant and cocky about it. Shooting the cook to restore the balance - meaning this puerco pibil is too good for Mexico, so the cook has to go. That's also why he wants El Presidente gone. Because he wants to make Mexico a better place and that just doesn't fit it with Sands' plans. I don't know about sociopath, but he's definitely a jerk...and a half.

I can't see this guy sitting, bemoaning his blindness. No, he's still standing, still a killer, and as 'chicle boy' said...he'll be okay. YES! I agree. I've read some fanfics as well, but I'm still of the persuasion that Sands is a mythical, legendary bad guy. He's a piece of really dark art. But I think it may have more to do with wanting to be always in control. He pulls the strings and makes things happen. And that gives him a bit of distance from what's actually happening and the actual danger. And I think this gives him a huge rush. He needs control like he needs air. There's no other explanation for his cool after losing his eys. He's not real. Anyone else would've been in the hospital. But...a jerk?? I dunno...he's awfully cool to be a jerk.

I agree with a lot of what you said, C.C. my perceptions may be colored by reading fanfic, especially Miss Becky's, but here's what I think:
Firstly, I completely agree that SJ. is not the kinda man to just lay down and die. He's a fighter. He will indeed be 'still standing' by the end. He's come this far, and he's not going to give up easily. If he wanted to do that, he had plenty of chances in the movie to let himself get shot by the cartel members after him. No, instead he fought and killed them all. Also, he could have allowed Ajdraez to kill him too, but nope again. Annd the fact that he raised his hand to 'Chiclet' at the end means he's not giving up either. The list just goes on and on. This is one tough m.f. who won't go down without a lot of dead bodies surrounding him.
Secondly, I have decided that while he definitely has sociopathic tendancies, the whole killing of the pork cook, the shooting of the coffee spilling waitress...hmm, maybe he just has something against restaruant employees?? anway, if he was a complete sociopath though, he most likely wouldn't care about what happens to 'Chiclet.' would he? As for the having control thing, oh yeah definitely. He needs to be in control. This seems to lend credence to him being more than a little unhinged mentally though. Isn't it usually the people that have something wrong in their own lives/minds that strive for control around them everywhere else? And SJ most certainly strives for control. For balance. Above all else. Except perhaps his own survival.
As for him being a jerk? I love him too much to call him that. Yes, I'm most likely...blinded by my SJ love, heh heh heh, but what of it? ;D

If I ever met him face to face, I'm sure I would be highly intimidated and unsure of whether or not he'll shoot me over a silly comment. I would also be in awe of his beauty.
Let's face it. The guy's a b@st@rd! A rude, heartless, sociopathic S.O.B. That's the reason why I love him, because he's such a complex character, he's so fun to watch. He's such a compelling person because he is truly unique, like none other. Sure he does have some trouble going on upstairs, and so what if he just so happens to be missing a pair of eyes. Sands is COOL! He never looses his cool, and even blind and shot up, he's always in control.

Let's see reasons to like Agent Sands:
1.) He's hot 2.) he's Johnny Depp
Now for the more serious actor reasons:
3.) He was clever and witty 4.) he had cool t-shirts 5.) he was evil but good 6.) he was a corru[t CIA agent, but there was still the working for the commen good....of evil but he was only restoring blaance like he said...so technically he didn't do anything wrong, you know?

Well, I must admit to liking Sands from the moment he mouthed, "Yes I would." It was just so unrepentingly honest. It bowled me over. The fact that he was on the edge of being sciopathic never bothered me . . . but then again, I seem to have an affinity for men on the edge of extreme mental imbalances. At least in my readin/viewing life. Just look at Mort. And Abberline. He's got some issues. Ones I plan to explore, but that's neither here nor there. I think Sands will always be my fist psycho!Johnny love though.

Love him. 100% Love him. He has freakin' awesome shirts, I love the vulgar yet hilarious things he says, he is a great shot with a pistol *even when blind*, and he just has such confidence!!! Besides Sam and Jack, he is my favorite Johnny character!!

So to speak. ;D Just a... magnetic personality, isn't he? Really, if he asked anything, I don't doubt he'd have (Some? Most? All?) people jumping through hoops for him. Then again... the gun in the small of their back wouldn't hurt either but... something about him is just very interesting. I'm thinking it could very well be confidence, a bit of pinache. Whatever it is, it certainly seems to attract an awful lot of fangirls.

Very professional, if a bit unorthodox. That's why we like him. Or is it... that's why we hate him, but we love the wisecracks that he says and can let the whole killing people slide? Or is it that he gets his and we love him even more because he's in such a bad position and yet still miraculously triumphs over it? Such a strange character, wouldn't you say? Your morals and mothers tell you to hate him while your eyes and heart tell you differently?
