Oh Christ ! I was looking forward to getting this movie out next month. Now reading this it's put me off big time. I get too involved, and I don't want to see Johnny lose his beautiful eyes.

It's not Johnny, it's Sands. And (trust his Angel) he brings it on himself.

The number one reason why I wasn't allowed to go see it in thearters was because of the eye gouging. When I finally saw it on DVD it was right before I had to go to school at like 6:30am and I started crying all pitiful like, you know, like silently with the tears rolling down and a look of pure heart brake on your face? Well, that was me. To this day I've only seen the eye gouging part 3 times, and I've seen the movie over 14...I'm sooo chicken...

How did he bring it on himself, and how can anyone justify such a thing happening? !!!!!

Have you seen the movie, PW? Sands takes the lives of innocents. He's lucky to escape only having lost his eyes. He didn't give any mercy to those he killed. The loss of his eyes is justice...and may be the only thing that saves his soul, in a way. That's my humble opinion.

Of course I've seen the movie, but his eyes weren't removed by good people who were trying to give him what he diserved, they were the bad guys!

Well, we'll just have to agree to disagree, m'dear. Sands is a bad guy. I don't believe he would've given the time of day to Chicle if he hadn't suddenly needed him. Sands made a lot of enemies and killed brutally, without justification. It's just my opinion that the eye-gouging was a form of what goes around comes around. If you deal heartlessly with others, others will deal heartlessly with you. Of course no one deserves to be brutalized, but if you live by the sword, you die by the sword. Again, just my opinion.

Awww, well I still think it was Johnny and it didn't need to be done. They could have cut off his ear or something.

Well... even that seems a bit brutish as far as punishments go. Hammurabi's code and all that terrible history stuff. I think that they eye gouging thing sort of endeared Johnny to the roll, more or less. Robert Rodriguez seemed to love it at any rate.
If you think about it, it becomes another weapon for Sands because his eyes (even cold and mean) made him human, where as he can spook the carp out of people now (like the first guy he nails after the ordeal) and take them completely off their guard. They never have to know he has no eyes so he can use it to his advantage.
It also makes him a little more vulnerable and less... evil?... because he's got to rely on other people to help him out if he wants to live (which, judging by the end of the movie, he probably does) so it's really something to think about, whether it was a good or bad thing, bad karma come to bite him in the butt or otherwise. Very interesting.

Depends on how you look at it. Of course... the Depends reference was completely unintentional, but something simply must catch a fish that size. Then again, could just be style preference... I loves ya too! ;D
