I know what you mean Too many movies are too predictable.... "A beautiful mind" for example.... AHHH.... I can call the ending and details to almost any movie... and I hate it... I love being surprised!! Gilbert Grape is definitely surprising... I love the twists and turns, and there are so many!

Back to the movie seeming so real.... all of the characters... even the sisters.... they seem like people you could know...
And even though how much I hate Mrs. Carver's affair... well that happens in real life as well...?
And Mr. Carver's death...
I love how it's not tainted to be pretty... it shows everything.

Yeah affairs definitely do happen in real life, I just wish that (in the book and movie) someone as young as Gilbert (he was 17 when it all started with Mrs. Carver) hadn't gotten sucked up into it. That makes me so sad.
As far as Mr. Carver's death goes...it was incredibly real, and it leads you to wonder about the extenuating circumstances involved in it...did Mrs. Carver have anything to do with it? Did he ever find out about Gilbert and his wife?

Well I have a few ideas on that... Either Mr. Carver knew and that's why his death happened... maybe it was a suicide because he couldn't live with the facts...
Or maybe Mrs. Carver did it as a way to get rid of him and the guilty feelings she had for cheating on her husband... and then she'd be free to be with Gilbert... Or at least get Gilbert to feel sorry for her...

The only problem with the second theory, is that even after her husband's death, she never went to see if she could be with Gilbert. It was almost like Gilbert was fun for her only when it was wrong (when Mr. Carver was still alive) and after his death, she dropped him like a hot potato. It explains this better in the book. The reason she chose Gilbert was because he was young and naive and he wouldn't tell. After Mr. Carver's death, she saw him for what he was: much too young for her, and "not good enough for her." (which I believe to be WRONG ) Gilbert saw her as a way out of Endora, and who can blame him?

Well actually it does make sense... because it freed her up to be with Gilbert... but then she realized that he was no longer happy with her... and Becky was better in his eyes... and so she took his pity and that last kiss and left...
?
Or maybe that's just how I read into it...
There's really no right answer...?

Too right my friend It's all perspective, but it is fun to hash it out, don't you agree?

hash it out? never heard that before. you mean discuss no? in that case yes it's great fun! I really think Mrs. Carver was just looking for attention from Gilbert... she liked how he made her feel young and worthwhile...

That is completely true...and once her husband died, she could just leave Endora and find someone else to make her feel young and worthwhile. (Though in my opinion, Gilbert is the best you'll ever find )

Meeee too. Overall, I did not like Mrs. Betty Carver. Ruined Gilbert's teenage years, thats what she did. Evil evil evil...I must go rescue him ;D

I watched this film yesterday and loved it ;D The reality of the film is beautiful. I could feel myself wincing every time someone asked Gilbert to help...and when everyone kept telling him he had to do better when he already did so much already. Leonardo's performance was amazing, he's definitely gone up in my estimation. It's rare to get a film about real people and real feelings, and I think everyone involved in this film did a great job. Touches of comedy, tragedy and love make up life and the film included them all.
