Oh, Craven, you're not supposed to look in here...what if we had given something away? Only joking sweetie, but you'll fit right in down at the 'still waiting' thread Can't believe they gave it an F! What were they thinking?! I'm beyond angry...I'm shocked! Appalled even! Hm....perhaps they are not fans of English history The film in no way made Johnny look bad, Craven dear, you need not fear. It was a fantastic performance by our main man. Don't let anyone tell you differently.

Seems the EW critics are not fans of history or at least British history! I was sorry to see the Times did not give it good reviews either & totally disagree on every front. As you say PP the staging: mud, filth, costume, make up alone was worth seeing but then the MAIN MAN'S perforamnce was I felt quite extraordinary. Haven't yet read anything much about the Earl what I have suggests he was unlikeable but then it seems so many liked him; men & women so although he was quite outrageous seems to me he was a product of the age & that in fact he spent his whole life ridiculing an age that was spent on hedonistic pursuits. Clearly he was a very clever man, probably genius without direction. I felt so much sympathy for him although wonder if I would have felt the same had another actor played the part???

Another thing: not sure if the " I do not wantn you to like me" , is a quote from his actual life but if so proves that he felt directionless in an age which was unfulfilling for him.

Lovely to see you hear, Whimsy. Sincerely hoping you will be a regular visitor I really and truly do not understand the bad reviews. I know I'm bound to say that being the Earl's Angel and all, but I'm his Angel for a reason! I would be the first one to put my hands up and say the film was not up to scratch if that's how I felt. I thought it was marvellous. A disillusioned genius in an age and a position where there was no such thing as going too far...what's there not to like? I'm sure you'd find reading about Lord Rochester really interesting, Whimsy. The history of the time is fascinating....I could go on for days about it but this isn't the right thread ;D. I felt a great deal of sympathy too and I don't think I would have felt it with any other actor simply because no one else can become characters like Johnny can.

I think the performance was outstanding, especially Johnny's... He was brilliant, I was amazed by his powerful acting, as I am almost every time I see him in a movie, but this time I was really blown away by it.
I normally probably wouldn't like this kind of movie very much, but as I already said the acting was just really good and the whole movie was impressive.

He was sublime, wasn't he? Such a strong performance It's great that Johnny has the power to make us see films we wouldn't normally see ;D. Just a shame the film has been through such a traumatic release process. Oh well. What did you think of the part when the Earl leaves Billy? I think I was close to shouting at the cinema screen

I agree! There were more moments where I kinda wanted to shout though...
I also found the ending (of the Earl) to be quite impressive..

I love the way his wife stuck by him no matter what. I mean, she couldn't have divorced him or anything but she still loved him, right until the end. She must have been a saint The end was very impressive His speech in court just had me choking up.
