Tornado is all gone. No damage to my knowledge. Whew! ;D I still love Charlie! You let me know if you find 'Limelight,' luv. It's one of his last films... I imagine one of Buster's last, too. I think it came out in 1952... I think. Modern Times!!! Yes, he sings a nonsense song, right? I want to see that one as well! (Heck I want to see them all!) Ok, a little bit of confusion though... I heard that he wrote the song 'Smile' for that film. Is that the nonsense song, or a different one? I just need to save up enough money to buy them all so I can find out for meself. Anybody know if any are available to rent?? *is looking through posters online* I want one!!!

CC and her Chaplinitis reach new levelsI ordered a poster. I don't even have a Johnny poster (but I'll get one, no worries) and I just ordered a poster from 'The Kid.' It's so cute though! Little Jackie Coogan, I think, has to be the cutest kid to every walk the planet. Wierd to think that he grew up to be Uncle Fester on the Addams Family. *shrug* Ok, in even more exciting news... I just realized that my university has a media library. Heee!!! And the online catalog tells me that there are tons of Chaplin flicks in there. *happy dance* They open in 40 minutes from now and then I will be going hog-wild. Plus, if anyone else cares... I found a copy of 'Modern Times' at my local Hollywood video. There have been several re-issues of his films, so it might not be that hard to find them after all. And... I started writing out the music from 'The Kid' as Iv'e watched the film over and over again thei weekend. In the 60's or 70's, Chaplin re-released it with a new score that he wrote himself... and I just love it. So... I've been writing out my favorite theme and playing it on the piano. (I did the same thing with POTC ) Almost done too... Ok, am I going nuts here? Because I am swooning over a guy who's been dead as long as I've been alive and that doesn't really bother me at the moment. *sigh*

CC, The nonsense song? Is that what its called ? I have no idea of its name, its just in another language,(Italian, Spanish?) I don't know which one, but he has a beautiful voice, so totally different from what you expect.
I need to go back to my video shop and buy some more of these and look for Limelight.

I'm Cuckoo for Charlie! Ok, lots of stuff to say today. *bouncing around* First of all, I went to the Media Library, and they had gobs of his films. Just gobs. I mean, he made over 80, so there are gobs of them. But... I'm not allowed to check them out... have to be a graduate student or faculty to take them out. Grrr. So I was allowed to watch it there, in a little carrel with my own little TV and DVD player. Not too bad... but there's no remote and I couldn't figure out how to select the other features, so I just watched the movie. My choice was... The Gold Rush. My thoughts are coming up.... Then I went to look all over town to every video place to look for videos to rent... because I want to take them home, gosh darnit!! Well at Hollywood video, they had one. Only one... out of 80-something, but it's still better than anyone else int own. So I got to rent... Modern Times!! Eeee!!! Happy happy happy! So I watched them both and here we go... The Gold RushReleased in 1925, it was re-released in 1946 with a new score and a narration track. I think the only one of his films with that. But anyway, he narrated it himself so I was . The little tramp is cute as ever, trying to get the girl, with mishap after mishap... I just want to give him a big hug. The Dance of the Rolls, it is called and this just killed me. When you've seen Johnny do it a hundred time, like I have... and then you see Charlie do the original! Well... Johnny must've watched him a hundred times, because he was spot on. Spot on. It's the same perfect expression... but the difference is in the ending. Charlie didn't lose one of the rolls and hit someone one... he just smiled his adorable smile to the girls as they loved it. *sigh* ... Second thing I have to comment on is a tiny little thing, but man, I just went gaga. Now I don't know that I've really ever expressed how much I love the style of the 20's... but I do. Especially the way the men dressed. Spats on the shoes, vests, ties, gloves, and such. Think Johnny in Benny & Joon. Yum. Anyhoo... Charlie's always in his Tramp outift... pants too big, jacket too small, huge old shoes, you know... cute, but that's it. Well. After Charlie makes it big in the gold rush, he gets him some new clothes and... I just love that look... on anybody really. Mmm. Alright... next! Modern TimesReleased during The Great Depression, this had to have been one of Charlie's best ever. I don't want to go all through the plot because it would take forever to descibe all that went on, but suffice it to say that I was rolling. I was shocked at how 'modern' it really was. I mean, yes it was modern then, in the 30's... but I never really realized that most things we know about today are not new at all. I guess maybe I was surprised to see that it was dealt with on film... but then again, Charlie was a visionary. Anyway, the thing that caught me off guard the most was a little scene while he was in jail for accidentally leading a protest, lol. (This made me think of you, HF. ) He and the other prisoners are seating down to eat, and the guy next to him is about to be searched for 'nose powder' as it is reffered to... so the guy quickly hides the stuff in the salt shaker!!! Naturally, Charlie unwittingly generously salts his meal, and let me tell you... I lost it! You just have to see it. About the songs!! Ok, yes he sings at the end!! The one and only time the Tramp's voice is heard, but the song is just gibberish words. At first I thought it was Italian... but it's not. I saw the words printed out that he sang, and it's a sort of French/Italian nonsense. Doesn't mean a thing. Lol. And yes, he has a wonderful voice. The other song I mentioned, that I now recognize, was not sung in the movie... but the music is used throughout. The theme is one I had heard before in another movie... and just had no idea that it was something else. Can't think of where I heard it either. But the song is one I've heard before at least a few times... it's a great song. I hope to find a recording of Chaplin singing it! On the DVD, the only clip of anyone singing the song is of Liberace. Eh. Also, I heard that for the movie 'Chaplin' that Robert Downey Jr. recorded the song and though it's not in the film, it is on the soundtrack. I want that, too. Hee. It just might be time for me to start writing out a different piece of music... I LOVE YOU, CHARLIE!!

On top of the fact that I just won a little auction on ebay for a tin sign from The Kid... I was the only one who bid on it, and I got it for $3. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D No, it's wasn't because of prison that I thought of you... well kinda, but no! It was the 'nose powder.' That cracked me up! He was spinning around in circles the whole time. You HAVE to see it!!! Of course, Johnny is not out in the cold!!! Did you hear me mentioning about men in the 20's? Let's think about Neverland, shall we? Gah!

Indeed. When I go back to the Public Library, I'll be scouring for films. I hope they have at least a couple. I hope I hope I hope... Serious QuestionOk, so when you were a kid, had you heard of Charlie Chaplin? Because I know that I had seen skits on Sesame Street where someone was dressed up as him, and doing the Little Tramp bit. But I was at work today, and showed the kids that picture that I drew yesterday, and they were just clueless. Then again, he died soon after I was born, so when I was little I guess he was still a well-known name. Maybe if the kids saw the real him, and not my goofy little drawing... I so loved Modern Times! I forgot to mention a lot of stuff yesterday because it was just way too much, but I have to say something today about the roller skating scene! G A H! That was incredible by today's standards! Seriously, how did he DO THAT?? I read something about a trick with glass... but I still don't get it. The other bit that I just have to mention is the factory scenes at the beginning. It's such a combination of so much greatness... his super speedy work with the wrenches, the scene in the cogs, striking the match when on break (HA HA!), his twitch, his breakdown and crazy ballet. Oh, it's just a treat to watch. The expression he has while he's going berserko is just so perfect!! I can't say enough about the factory scenes... some of my favorite stuff yet. SS, which ones have you seen, btw? So far I've seen.... Tillie's Punctured Romance, The Kid, The Gold Rush, Modern Times, and a short called Behind the Scenes. I can't wait to find more!! ;D ;D ;D To Find List: City Lights, The Great Dictator, The Circus, A Woman in Paris, Monsieur Verdoux, Limelight, and tons and tons of shorts!!

SS doing a Charlie dance... ;D ;D ;D Oh CC, what can I tell you He is so OLD in this movie and he speaks all the way through and so far I've heard three songs (all in English) and then I got interupted... so I haven't finished watching it yet. He is so amazing in this movie, he is totally brilliant. I'll be back.

Woooo! Awesome!! ;D On the Modern Times video that I rented, it had clips from other films on it, so I got to see a tiny bit of Limelight... and it was part of the stuff with Buster! Yes, they're both pretty old in that one... let me see... *math* When it came out, Charlie was about 63 and Buster was about 57, depending on the month. Can't wait to hear all about it!! ;D I had some fun with the kids...You know, the ones who yesterday didn't know who he was? Well, I was fiddling with a dictionary, and oddly enough it had lots of entries for people in it. Strange for a dictionary, I though, but there you go. Suer enough there was an entry for Chaplin, Sir Charles Spencer, complete with picture of The Tramp. So I showed the kids, and they still didn't know who he was, but they were impressed with my drawing, lol. And I had a delightfully fun time explaining to them who he was! "Oh, so he was alive a long time ago?" "Yes, and he made movies a long time ago." "Black and white ones, huh?" "Yep, it was before color... and even before sound! He made silent movies." "Oh... *look at picture* Did he always look like that?" "Well, that's his costume. He's dressed up as the character of *points* see? The Tramp. He usually played that character in his movies. But he didn't look like that in real life. He didn't have a moustache, and *points again* see? He's wearing make-up." "So, was he a teenager?" "Hehe, no. When he started making movies he was about my age... in his twenties." "Wow." "He was did stage work before that. You know, he acted on a stage instead of in a movie. He did that when he was a teenager." "So, he was in drama!" "Hehe, yeah kinda. But back then, they called it vaudeville." "Vaude-huh? What?" *They make wierd faces and start getting silly, poking fun at a word they've never heard.* Kids are so funny sometimes. ;D I get a kick out of seeing their minds work, lol.
