OK, time to throw my hat in. I've already moved through the "LOVED IT - No, maybe this was really weird- No, really it was awesome" cycle and I've come out a die hard fan. "Hoist the colors!"
Ye be warned. This will be looooooooong.
I think the opening of the movie lets you know right off that this one is darker and more angst-ridden. It's right out in front for all to see. This movie is heavier on the drama and lighter on the comedy... but still quite heavy on the weird. And how much do I love this new song? Must find the lyrics. Now.
There are a lot of deaths and of important characters, even. I counted 8 major characters that died in some way (regardless of whether they came back), not counting Jack and Hector! Poor Kraken. (A little snarf for the Kraken-slayers!)
I liked Sao Feng. I wasn't too sad to see him go though, because that contributed to the whole Lizzie-is-the-pirate-king bit, which I loved.
Did anyone else think that Sao Feng mistaking Lizzie for Calypso was a bit foreshadow-ish? Because she ends up with the same fate, doesn't she?
Ever notice what a running theme 'betrayal' is in this one? It's everywhere.
You who poo-poo Captain Teague, stay back! I thought it was great! No, Keith's not winning any awards here, but did anyone really expect that? And it is clear that he is Jack's father! First off, he does look enough like Jack that you're supposed to wonder at least. Then it's confirmed with the "How's mum?" line. Oh, and Teague calls him 'Jackie' and 'boy.' I doubt anyone but his own father would call Jack "boy," eh?
Loved the pieces of eight. *giggle* And Gibbs can always be counted on for a good quip there. Ragetti's eye?!
I find it truly hilarious that this causes the first instance of an eyepatch in the whole trilogy. At least I think it is... first major character anyhow.
to Johnny for naming him Hector. Love that a behind-the-scenes joke from the first flick becomes canon in the third one. Gotta love ol' Hector. He really was great in this one. But... why is it that he can't speak the incantation correctly? What was that meant to be about?
*huggles Jack the monkey* Best performance by a monkey in a film ever! He was shot out of a cannon! What a brave little guy. *gigglefit*
So... why is it that Tia Dalma brought Barbossa back in the first place. Was it her plan all along to have him free her? I guess so. And way to go Ragetti for making her explain why Jack was harder to save than Barbossa. *snicker* T&T are so clever- they knew everyone would ask that!
Hadras got conked in the head. *snigger*
And finally to Jack. Ah, Jack. Captain Jack has come back. Huzzah!
Jack's MPD was amazingly weird. I can only imagine Johnny coming up with weird things for the multiple Jacks to do. Did you see the one with the sash tied round him like a diaper? Yeah, that would've been a fun scene to be on set for, eh?
I think Jack reached a new level of bizarre in DJ's locker. He was already a little off, we know. But now he's having full-on conversations with little Jacks in his hair! And really, who wouldn't go mad on a ship with no wind, and no crew... and no water?
I was the only in the WHOLE theater that laughed at Jack knocking Will off the ship with only his bad breath. Will's not a wimp, people! That HAD to be worse than Kraken breath to knock Will off his feet!
I absolutely love Jack's new flag. It's high time we got an original flag in these movies! He's been using Calico Jack Rackham's flag this whole time, you know.
My one complaint: Where was the history between Jack and Beckett? They never spoke about the betrayal there! This one better have deleted scenes on the DVD is all I have to say.
I was a little confused at the ship blowing up around Beckett, but I think I've decided I like it now. That way he gets to see everything destroyed before he dies. "It's just good business."
And what happens to the rest of the East India Trading Company? Does it just go away?
Favorite part of the whole thing: Up is Down. That was brilliantly cool. Would that work in the real world? Probably not. But that's what movies are for, right?
Good grief, my fingers are tired now. Surely there'll be more later.
